Not a shocker, but still a bit of a surprise. It's not clear to me that they needed the CAP space before March so I'm not seeing a huge CAP benefit. I mean sure, they got some more CAP and that could be useful, but there is really only one more deal you might really want to do during the season and that would be Martinez and he could be done without any a more CAP. Martinez deal, which doesn't really have to be done until next off-season, doesn't seem like a reason to weaken the team.
I think this speaks to 3 more important issues. Daniels may have outlived his welcome in the locker room. The team had some injury concerns with him. He wasn't part of their long-term plan beyond this year and if they had kept Daniels, they may have had to cut a promising youngster like Adams, Keke, Lancaster or Brown. They probably figured Daniels being gone actually make the team stronger - maybe not right away, but down the road.
