Packers release DT Mike Daniels

i'm not sure how much i believe that. or if they were, i wonder how hard they tried. there are ways that they could have made the trade more attractive if they really wanted to.
How? The issues were $8m in salary and injury concerns.

throw in another (developmental) player with three years left on his rookie contract) is one idea.

This is not madden teams won't give up picks for guys who have bad contracts and are injury prone. Daniels trade value was zero after the last 2 years

I think the injury was also a concern. Last 2 years is a reach.

I think with Daniels age and injury concern he might end playing on a one year prove your healthy deal for around half of what he was going to make this year with GB.

Not a shocker, but still a bit of a surprise. It's not clear to me that they needed the CAP space before March so I'm not seeing a huge CAP benefit. I mean sure, they got some more CAP and that could be useful, but there is really only one more deal you might really want to do during the season and that would be Martinez and he could be done without any a more CAP. Martinez deal, which doesn't really have to be done until next off-season, doesn't seem like a reason to weaken the team.

I think this speaks to 3 more important issues. Daniels may have outlived his welcome in the locker room. The team had some injury concerns with him. He wasn't part of their long-term plan beyond this year and if they had kept Daniels, they may have had to cut a promising youngster like Adams, Keke, Lancaster or Brown. They probably figured Daniels being gone actually make the team stronger - maybe not right away, but down the road.
