This a strange year. Teams are losing games that they are heads on favorites to win. Only one NFC Division is a real winner. The West. They stand at 20-10. Our Division is 15-14. NFC South is 15-15, and NFC East is 12-21. As far as our 5-2 record, it stands as the second best record. Seattle is 6-1, and we're tied with the Saints, Bucs, and Cards.
Our scoring is good. We stand at 219 points in 7 games. 31.3 points per game. Only Tampa Bay at 31.7, and Seattle at 34.3 are outscoring us. We're on schedule to be one of the best teams, based on offensive firepower.
Our defense is failing. It's pretty simple. We are giving up 26.7 points per game. That simply means that even bad teams can put up solid numbers against us, and when it happens, and our match ups with our offense doesn't generate a lot of points, we're screwed. Point in case? The Vikings game. We lose 28-22. We gave up about the normal amount of points that we do, but the Vikings defense played what could be argued as by far, their best game of the year, to this point. Minnesota gives up an average of just over 31 points per game. We failed to cover that figure. Why?
I haven't got the figures yet, but in week #7, the beginning of a problem emerged. Adams was the target on 16 passes, the rest of the team was targeted 18 times. Watching the game yesterday, I got the impression that they'd committed to as high, or higher a percentage of throws directed at Adams than in week #7. I could pick out guys being open repeatedly, well before the throws, and Rodgers either not seeing them, or already being locked in on Adams, and ending up having to throw it away.
This one man receiving show is killing us. At least they're bringing our TEs into play, but they are often way more than they are targeted. Spread the ball around. Quit relying on Rodgers to bail them out on offense after first and second down failed runs, creating an obvious passing down with 6 or more yards to gain. We've become predictive, and then relying on the Rodgers to Adams connection to do it all.
In the end, our defense is going to continue to fail when they're needed most. They may pull out a great game now and then, but it's only temporary. They can be counted on to fail. They put the Packers in a position yesterday that said that our offense had to score every time we had the ball, or we were going to get beat. We just couldn't sustain a couple of drives, and we're suddenly down by 14.
The rest of the season will rest directly on the shoulders of Rodgers right arm. Don't count on the running game, because Jones being nicked may leave him less than 100% for the rest of the year. The rest of our RBs are pedestrian at this point.
Just my opinions.
