2024 Badger Football Thread

NIL money has nothing to do with playing Nickel Defense with 2 Down Defensive Linemen against a road grading running team.

I agree times have changed, money talks, and Wisconsin is probably more thrifty.

I agree that Wisconsin's in a pickle. We don't have a QB who consistently throw the ball in the realm of guys in the correct uniforms and we don't receivers who catch the ball if he does. Maybe they're too shocked when it does happen.
Playing short on the DL because we are running out of bodies to play a 4 man front. I live here, I know the program inside and out as stated before. You can't overstate the damage PC and Jimmy L did here, both were selfish and were not in it for the best of the program. The shelves are not stocked and trying to do so in this environment when any kid can just hit the door because he's ticked isn't what we had as little as 4 years ago.

We have a ton of boosters that think the answer is walk on kids that can't start on D3 schools because we should support the home state BS. So many factors working against Fick here that he didn't create.

UW has to turn the page on that mindset or it's going to be 4-5 win seasons for a longtime.

yeah except look at the schedule they play.....apples and oranges. Great program but not in the same realm of this discussion.
i totally agree with you, mark. they have not played one team that could compete in the b1g. let's see how they do when they play notre dame in two weeks.

So you're telling me we don't have 4 available Down Defensive Linemen? Hard for me to accept, but you're there, and I'm not, so I'll accept your word.

And, I'm not arguing that we don't need better players, and, I'm sure Wisconsin is being too thrifty in putting together NIL money, and it isn't hard for me to imagine that there are forces actively working to undermine Coach Fickell and staff.

But, I don't believe they are using what they have available in the best ways, and I don't believe they are inspiring the players to play to the best of their abilities.

A lot of the issues are on the players. I read they appeared flat and were not fired up. That just amazes me. Unless, they've thrown in the towel.

If that's it. I feel sorry for the coaches having to deal with quitters

So it can be done
"The conversation surrounding Fickell’s hire involved the word ‘championships,’ both from Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh and from Fickell himself. The on-field results have clearly fallen far short of that self-imposed expectation.

In reality, Cignetti is currently doing exactly what many expected Fickell to do upon arriving in Madison. He jumped from a successful Group of Five program, brought in a loaded transfer class, changed the culture and is winning instantly. Ironically, a significant piece of that success is longtime Badgers assistant Bob Bostad.

Wisconsin had a schedule similar to Indiana’s in 2023, if not even easier. The difference in performance is striking. Wisconsin needed to work through substantial growing pains on both sides of the football while Indiana, as mentioned, is suddenly a College Football Playoff contender.

This comparison won’t do much to dictate Wisconsin’s future under Fickell, or where Indiana goes under Cignetti. It’s worth pointing out, however, when it’s argued that more time is needed before success can follow.

That idea of ‘more time’ is no longer a luxury in today’s age of college football. Most top coaches have zero trouble winning instantly at new programs. Cignetti, an ascending top coach in the sport, only needed six months to turn a 3-9 team and bottom-tier program into a CFP participant.

2025, now, will be a critical season for Fickell and the Badgers to respond."

Except and I've said it before and your not listening or don't want to...their is an issue in Madison on people from PC's are group kicking back on the culture change. Cignetti didn't have that road block. Apples> Oranges
I'm listening.

And, I don't doubt their are people unhappy from the Chryst camp. There are always people who won't give up the old.

But, if you're the guy, you storm right through that. If you Kow Tow to those that want the old ways, you're doomed to failure. So if that's it, Coach Fick has made his bed, is just collecting money, and doesn't have the balls to lead Bucky to the promised land.

Too many times, Bucky doesn't even look fired up - and all too frequently not even interested - to play football. I don't understand that. You're playing for Wisconsin - Division 1 Fuckin' Football. It doesn't matter whether I understand it, it's not acceptable.

The truth is that Cignetti is doing with Badger caliber players what we though Coach Fick would do. His players are inspired, play hard, play smart, and are winning.

If Coach Fick had his players playing half as well, you wouldn't be hearing any old school Chryst or Leonhard shit. The problem is his players are playing at a barely competent smart level and a woefully inadequate heart level - and are getting their asses kicked because of that.

If you are at a D1 program:

  • You should be able to throw the ball in the vicinity of someone in your uniform
  • You should be able to catch the ball
  • You should be able to tackle
  • You should be able to block
Others might be better than you and beat you, but you should be able to do the above. And, that should make you competitive.

Excuses not accepted from Keg Man

I've been hard on Bucky. I still believe in no excuses.

But, this week, this one shining week, for 60 minutes, Bucky plays physically and mentally tough, plays smart, plays focused, plays hard, and plays like they are excited to be there, and we're 5th Quartering for the ages!
