Thompson: "We value draft and development, we value free agency"

Wow, this must be the only Packers forum that didn't blow up with the numbers Trevathan and Ladarius Green got for CHI and PIT... Both 4-year deals, Trev 7M avg and Green 5M avg.

I may have noticed that I'm not usually one to bang the UFA drum, and there were a TON of Matt Millen -grade deals done yesterday.

But it does hurt a bit that both of the top fillers of Packers' needs got deals we could've afforded. Both deals got A- grade on Walterfootball, for a good reason.

It's possible we couldn't have gotten those guys, at least at those prices, even if TT had put in 100% effort. Trev seemed to follow his former coaches more than money. Green has no competition at all for full-time starting role in PIT.

It's the perceived lack of effort that hits you in the gut. We didn't miss out on those deals because we re-signed Guion or Taylor. Nope. We could've fitted Green AND Trev in our 2016 cap regardless. TT doesn't even try, or so it seems.

I'm pretty sure that TT being at Wisconsin pro day while others were hustling for deals was a non-issue - TT can work via the phone, and there ARE legitimate draft targets for us there. But he MUST know it also looks like a big middle finger pointed at fans clamoring for a signing. Now the wolves are howling at full force.

I will keep half on eye on both players this season. It IS possible Trevathan was a product of great talent around him, and that Green can't become the no. 1 guy. Remember, Green's NEVER had 500-yard season.
But if they succeed, even I will say: Dammit Ted...

Trevathan knows fox so that played into him wanting to go to Chicago and Green he was a question mark because he really has always been 2nd fiddle and has had injury problems. Could the Packers have got them? Perhaps but it probably means they have to go above what they paid to sign for.

Agree with everything you said.

Steelers have NOTHING at TE apart from disappointing Jesse James. In GB Green would've had to share at least some snaps with RRod. We'll see if he can stay healthy and thrive as TE1.

CHI had the former coach -lure, would've had to fight that with money. And the deal wouldn't have looked so good after that.

First. Thompson does not negotiate contracts. Russell Ball does. And to imply that Thompson did not try because he was at pro day....last I checked cell phones still work and in reality the parameters of both deals were done Monday.
I am not a fan of Thomson and the way he approaches free agency. But it takes 2 parties to make a deal. Like it or not Trip Advisor doest not rate Greetings Bay as the ideal free agent destination. Who knows where GB was on their wish list.
Lot of factors go into free agency.

Sure you have to outbid to jake a deal on the open market. Seems you changed your view on Green

That's why I thought Green could be had for maybe around 4 million. Having to pay maybe 7 or more to get him no way.

I said the same thing in shout yesterday.
So you guys honestly believe Ted has contacted anyone? He's sitting there waiting for players and agents to call him back??? Sorry guys. I just can't believe that. The guy is not going to change his modus operandi, even if the head coach has complained about his style. His drafts are not good enough to completely ignore FA. He needs to retire, imo. The modern game and building rosters has passed him by.

Has he contacted agents. Yes I 100% believe he has. Now what the team is willing to pay is another matter. After rookie pool there is about $13m in cap space left. Considering team carry over money and based on history what GB carries over we have maybe $7- maybe $8m to spend max. So anyone who is on the market was unaffordable. Every FA signed this week was over paid by a lot. It takes 2 too make a deal. GB a is not high on the destination list for many players. Even it Thompson has interest there is no guarantee it's mutual. And even if there was mutual interest then are the contract parameters workable. Agents contact GMs. GMs contact agents. It's a game. It's a dirty game. The "tampering" rule is a joke. Agents knew the market weeks ago. Thompson knew the market weeks ago.

Yeah. Not gonna argue.

I guess even I need to vent sometimes :D

I think we'll go into the draft in a rather good position. With Perry re-signing, we have depth at OLB, a premium position. Having Daniels locked is huuuuge, and Guion's return means NT/DT isn't a gaping hole either. Taylor's return gives security at OG.
