NIL - Texas style

Money has been handed out for decades don’t be naive. Read Bootleggers Boy.
No doubt it has but it seems with now it's open season and money can be handed out more freely without worry about being caught doing it under the table.

And so now that it’s open it’s different? It wasn’t handed out freely decades ago. Nevin Shapiro would beg to differ and Bobby Lawler would also

Of course it has, but now it will be above the table, and we'll be seeing how many scholarships are snagged by students who just happen to walk on for sports programs. As a member of the team, since their name will be on the roster, and in most cases a jersey, they will get NIL money as well.

Just another way to add 10-20 kids to a football team, a half dozen in basketball, and put a school in a position where they have a highly paid baseball team through NIL money, and scholarships that aren't tied directly to the sport.

If that isn't seeing a dramatic increase in money for the richer teams, I don't know what is.

There still are scholarship limits and roster limits. That’s not changing. Unless the NCAA changes that (highly doubtful). They are discussing scholarships per year (25 max) but that won’t change the total.

You totally missed what I said. You're wearing blinders on this. Every year, there are walk ons that join college football players, who are getting private scholarships to attend school. Those scholarships are not linked to the sports program... so they are not part of any maximum quota allowed. They are based on academic, need, or any other criteria the person/people offering it want to place on it. Those walk ons also miraculously land part time jobs, often as assistant building managers, or some other menial task, which turns into free lodging, and pays a small stipend, which converts into meal money. In other words, they are pretty much getting as much as the athletic scholarship athlete.

Since their name would be on a uniform, it would mean that by rule, they too would share in the NIL program, because that is a personal issue, not an issue related to scholarship.

You need to think like someone who is going to skirt the system, not have guard rails when applying the rules.

roster limits yes but scholarship limits really don't matter. If a school is out of them and is trying to keep a kid that would go elsewhere you darn well know they can find a way to pay this kid under the table to attend the school to keep him.

Scholarship limits exits in all sports and it matters. You don’t think the NCAA will take hard look at a roster that starts All American walk on’s for 3 years? You don’t think a kid on scholarship that’s not seeing the court of field because some “walk on” is playing in front of him won’t run for the portal? Oh and there are limits on how many kids travel for away games also

Name me one kid who is on academic or GIA full ride that’s playing P5 football now. Or more specifically a 4 or 5 star kid. You don’t think the NCAA will have its radar on when 5 “walk on’s” are all conference or all American?

Academic scholarships or “hardship” GIA are for the most part endowments to the university and also not 100% full rides. If you start paying for “walk on’s” with your example it’s becomes an impermissible inducement or pay-for-play. Guard rails as you call them in states that have NIL legislation are more than guard rails. It’s not blinders. Ive read the legislation in Texas and Florida, sure the collectives are not skirting the system as much as they have found loopholes. Semantics maybe.

The big NIL money is to get kids on scholarship for multiple reasons. One reason? Kid gets injured he’s technically got medical coverage when on scholarship. Walk on? NCAA's health care is that once a student-athlete is no longer enrolled and under scholarship, they don't receive any medical help from their school. You think a collective will pick up the medial expense and / or insurance premiums for kids on top of 6 figure payments.

Not 3 years know but lets say they have a freshman tell the kid we can't give you a scholarship this year but give you walk on status for this year. We can "help" with tution until we can get you under a scholarship next year.
