2024 Badger Football Thread

The timing of the Longo firing makes me wonder. There are 2 games left, what's to be gained? Is it just to start the search process early? Were there some issues in the locker room? Is there a guy Fick already has in mind who's currently not with a team? Maybe they did it to give recruits plenty of notice before national signing day in a few weeks. I don't know, just seems like odd timing.

I'm sure there will be guys leaving because of this, but I don't necessarily see a mass exodus since Longo wasn't really all that involved in recruiting other than QBs. I'm sure Locke leaves and his younger brother decommits. Not sure about LaCrue and Mettauer. Might depend on the replacement. Doesn't have to be an air raid guy to keep the current guys and recruits, but you better bring in someone with a known history of having a solid passing game or you will lose a bunch of them.
IMO the UW AD was hearing it from alumni donors that they want something done. AD tells this to Fickell who then fires Longo now to appease the donors.

I don't think donors had much to do with this. There's been rumours of tension between Fick and Longo for a while now. I don't know for sure, but I think Fickell initiated this.

Fick is a bit of a micromanager, Longo wasn't allowed to do what he needed to do with the offense.
To be sure this will have deeper roster implications then just QB as Longo also helped recruit OL,TE and WR especially true with WR transfers.
They need to fill this quickly or risk losing top members of the next 2 recruiting classes.

Agree with your previous post but question how much losing Longo is going to hurt us on the roster. Not trying to argue or be a jerk, but the WR, TE and QB additions during his time here haven't set the world on fire.

QB
Evers - miss. B.Locke - miss. Mordecai - okay. Van Dyke - incomplete. Mettauer - unknown/incomplete. L.Locke - unknown '25 who is likely gone.

WR
Green - meh. CJWilliams - okay. Berry-Johnson - incomplete. Henry - miss. Griffin - miss. Miller and Hilton - unknown '25 guys. (I'm not including Pauling or Burroughs since they came from Cinncinatti with Fickell. Not sure what to do with Kekahuna since he was a Badger recruit before Fickell/Longo got here but decomitted and then recommitted.)

TE
Ashcraft - miss/incomplete. McGohan - miss/incomplete. Booker - incomplete/unknown. Stec - incomplete/unknown. Bork and Davis - unknown '25 kids.

A lot of these guys are young and we don't know what we'll get with them. Of the Longo guys that have played, there really isn't much to write home about. You might lose some of the young guys but not all. Hopefully whoever replaces Longo will bring some of his own guys with him to kinda even things out.

As for o-line, I kinda feel Longo isn't THE reason they are at UW in most cases and I think the new OL coach will play a big part in retaining the vast majority of them assuming a quality replacement at OC. I could be wrong, we'll see.

yep. now they get to start the recruiting process all over. because guys who committed to the badgers because of the air raid offense are simply going to decommit. i'm sure they have backup offers.
But I thought one of the big issues we have is that we've been running the air raid, without the players to run it? They've already had a couple of recruiting classes to work with, but now the next class was going to be able to fix all that? maybe the air raid in itself just doesn't work as well against Big 10 defenses compared to when they ran it at Cincy?

well, it clearly doesn't work well with the players we have. i think you have to have an accurate passer who knows how to read a defense - something we don't have. and it also helps to have receivers who can catch the ball - again, something we don't have. then maybe it would work against b1g defenses.

Firing Longo is horrible at this time. We need 1 win to keep our Bowl eligible streak alive. While Bucky has been unimpressive offensively, I can't imagine it will improve with a new offensive coordinator.

Who really knows what happened? I think between the lines, you could read that Longo was unhappy and not able to run the offense the way he wanted.

I just don't see how we beat either Nebraska or Minnesota now.

well, Nebraska and Minnesota aren't exactly lighting it up either right now. MN last game was a loss to Rutgers . . .
