Thompson: "We value draft and development, we value free agency"

ESPN's Rob Demovski (formerly of JS) is saying Pep is trying to woo Matt Forte to GB.

It makes so much sense. With backup running back James Starks a free agent, the Packers need someone to push Eddie Lacy. Word is that another ex-Bear-turned-Packer Julius Peppers has been trying to recruit Forte to Green Bay. It sounds like Forte wants to go to a contender, so perhaps the Packers could get him at an affordable price. -- Rob Demovsky

I don't like 30+ RBs, but never wanna walk away from this one IF Forte is willing to come on the cheap (~3M avg). But for him to be no. 2 AND taking a discount....Pep would have to be helluva salesman, or Forte to REALLY wanna play for a contender.

I think he ends up in NE can get same amount if not more in NE and would probably be the lead back there and have good shot at a ring too.

yeah, i'd have to agree that this sounds more like the patriots kind of acquisition. bellichick loves to get these veteran running backs who have performed well for several years and are just starting the downside of their career. it has worked well for them.

With TE Dwayne Allen's deal to stay with the Colts, the roof is already blown and orbiting the Earth even before the start of actual UFA signing period.

Per a league source, the Colts and tight end Dwayne Allen have worked out a four-year, $29.4 million deal. He’ll get $12 million in year one, $17 million total through two years, and $22 million through three years. The includes $16 million guaranteed; it’s unclear how much is fully guaranteed at signing.

7.35M average and 16M guaranteed!? For a guy who produced 401 yards and 7 touchdowns LESS than Richard Rodgers in 2015!?

"Guaranteed" is different from "fully guaranteed", but still...

Crazy money for Allen. Best to steer clear of FA this week. See what's available next week. At least this means they won't go after Fleener. Maybe he will come at a far more reasonable price.

Or Ted waits till June and offers a guy who will work for the vet min just that. Who cares if he will be longshot to make the team.

Guarantee is guarantee. Yes it's the same

Not even NEAR the same.

I'm not a lawyer, so I'd advice you to search overthecap.com for articles on the subject.

Signing bonus is theoretically guaranteed at the signing. Unless the player screws up, and has to pay it back.

Roster bonuses etc. are "guaranteed" year-by-year. But only if you're on said roster, so not really guaranteed.

Guaranteed base salary is another cap management tool.

But there can be clauses for most of the above... For injury, talent, retirement, motivation, weight requirements, etc... And there usually are, if the team has any leverage in the negotiation.

Most NFL contracts are about the same. Agents leak out total amount to impress potential clients. And guarantees may not end up to be all that. Depends on the situation and the team.
