Rodgers, The Packers and Reality

My view of the hero pass is a bit more cynical. Wasn't hero pass at all. It was Arod saying I've suffered two major injuries for you and carried this team for a decade and you couldn't even get me a WR last year. I'm done trying to sacrifice my body and potentially get nailed running it in.

GB is at a crossroads. Can't have your cake and eat it too. You want Arod? Get him the tools he needs for his style. Want to go ML? Make the break now and move on and get some picks.

In those situations I don't think the players are actually thinking, it's just instinct. And Rodgers' instinct is that he'd rather lose playing his way than win playing someone else's. That moment called for him to summon his inner team-player, put on his brass knuckles and take the ball in or give it his all trying. Find your inner Elway. Instead he threw a no chance ball and then blamed the coach afterwards, which, again, is his instinct.

As for the second half of your post CD, I do understand your logic, I'm just sick and tired of hearing about what Rodgers doesn't have. He was amazing this year. He had two All-pro OL, and one more possibly knocking at the door soon. He had a highly productive back, an all-pro WR having the best year in GB history, a productive red zone TE. I saw one of those deep-dive stats that showed GB had the highest - or one of the highest - number of completions to receivers with defenders 5 yards or more away from them, which means Rodgers had a coach who was scheming guys open for him. How much more are we supposed to demand for him? Im sorry, the 2011 Packers receiving group is not coming back. Teams don't get built that way in the NFL, it was a fluke that really only happens in big college programs now where you get 3,4,5 guys who could be #1/2 receivers.

None of this is to say I don't want him back next year, just to reiterate what Ive said before the NFCC - that there was serious legacy stuff on the line for #12 in that game and he failed the test.

If we're not going to go all in, we should have traded Rodgers. I doubt we'll go all in, we'll keep conservatively trying to build and keep our cap under control. But, we're wasting opportunities.

I believe the Packers had the most efficient offense in the NFL in 2020, and #12 is a big part of that happening but so is ML.

Two things stand out to me as to why there is so much hand wringing going on.

1. The offense zigged when it should have zagged in the NFCCG. #12 should have tried to run on 3rd down, rather than pass. But the offense also went 3&out off of 2 second half INT’s that the defense gift wrapped for them. Both ML and #12 own that. These failures tend to make us forget all the successes the offense had over the course of the season.

2. Just two words. Kevin. King.

How could GB have possibly entertained the idea of trading Rodgers prior to 2021? His massive contract and the cap hit absolutely dismisses this notion in any way shape or form.

Plus, the constricting his massive contract puts on the cap pretty much limits what the Packers could do with any suggestion of going “all in”. Unless we are living in Casino Royale?

That's true but secondary. Just names and numbers, who is the FA WR last year that gets us over the top, and how do you fit them in. #1 WR FA was Randall Cobb, for context.

All in works well in the NBA & MLB where the cap allows teams to spend whatever they want.

Now flip side, superman has a 3rd and goal from the 8 with a clear run in TD..take the 6 and stop the hero pass crap.

i've seen that bucs defense close a running lane in an instant. that 8-yards run in td was no lock (not to mention, 8 yards was from the line of scrimmage. it would have been an 11 yard run). and if you ask me, trying to run it in - that would have been the hero crap. throwing a pass is his job. trying to run it in would have been him trying to do it all. and if he didn't make it, people would have been crucifying him for trying to be the hero. even worse, he might have been injured in the process. that's my take.

I just don’t understand the “all in” thing. In 2019 they did go “all in” with both Smiths & Amos. In 2020 there was not a FA @ WR who fit

note that your "all-in" was all defense. they also added turner who turned out to be pretty good. but no offensive weapons. so they went all-in on defense, and the defense still sucked. the offense had to put up at least 30 points per game to just have a chance to win.
