Packers 2022 Draft Thread

This Xavien Howard contract, and how it affects Alexander’s extension has got me thinking.
The amount Howard has gotten guaranteed is going to make Alexander’s extension near impossible to structure.
I’m honestly beginning to wonder if GB might consider making a predraft/draft day deal to trade Alexander for draft picks and then draft another CB in the top 40-45 this year.
There’s several candidates that would be plug/play picks at Slot/Nickel this year.

Maybe I’m over hyping this Howard deal in my mind, but it’s got me thinking.
I had the 1st round corner selected. Then changed it with the Douglas signing and Alexander being ready. Made a hybrid type pick in 2nd but now you have me re-thinking my 1st round CB pick again!

That's highly likely but I digress. Wolf always had some old adage about never having enough quality CBs and my thinking, taking one in the 1st, was it was keeping with Gutey's unpredictability. Everyone thinking edge or W, even OL in 1st round R but I can see Gutey going against that grain. Although, now with 2 picks in Rd 1 and Rd 2, he may be able to grab several of those need type picks. This draft predicting stuff is maddening.

This is new NFL top players are going to get paid no matter what and it's likely going to be all guaranteed deals.
I’m not convinced that’s going to be a broad brush that all will be guaranteed. QB is most likely after that some situations yes but not all

What I found disconcerting about Howard’s contract was not just the guarantees, but that he’s already 29 yrs old!
Making a deal like that to a 25 yr old like Alexander is easier to digest, but (essentially) a 5 yr deal to a 29 year old CB is a real headscratcher!

Yeah but the structure gives some flexibility
  • $36.3M guaranteed at signing (signing bonus + 2022 salary + 2023 salary)
  • $4M of 2024 salary fully guarantees on the 3rd league day of 2024 (injury guaranteed at signing)
  • 2024 Roster Bonus: $3M (2nd league day of 2024)
  • 2025 Roster Bonus: $3M (2nd league day of 2025)
  • 2026 Roster Bonus: $3M (2nd league day of 2026)

As long as he doesn’t get seriously injured.
Can’t say the same for JA.
But, yes, that does leave some flexibility.

It think it's heading towards it as more top players get it will trickle down

That's what I am saying Alexander is 25 years old he's a stud. I say you have to figure out the cap not let good players walk. At some point players won't even want to stay here they will just demand a trade in year 3 or 4 knowing they won't get a new contract because GB is cheap asses that are more worried about the cap then winning

It throws a wrench in this draft, as you have stated earlier, but it also, imo, makes the negotiations even harder. I mean, how do you even start off, if that Howard contract is going to be the baseline? I think it's going to take some getting used to, having some studs on the roster that will eventually need a pay day but how many of those can you have on roster before you start taking on water? I don't fully understand all the contract stuff but it seems like there will be a reckoning down the road somewhere. I'm a little leery of it all but willing to sit back and see how it all plays out. As with most of the top paid stars, you were about the injury bug and making that contract and even more burdensome type of anchor.
