BadgerMens BB Thread 2023/24

Gard will be back. Expect the same but in decline.

Bucky plays technically sound but soft Basketball.

Chucky told reporters James Madison shocked them at the beginning. How could that happen? It's the damn dance you've played for all year. As soon as the draw was announced most of the talking heads called this. How, just how, could Bucky not be ready to play? They missed at least 3 lay ups and a bunch of free throws in the last 5. They were desperate and unorganized. They're simply soft Basketball players.

Regardless what they've said. I think a bunch are going to search for greener pastures. If they want to play pro ball, I can't blame them.

Things that bother me about this coming season, with or without Gard. Guys leaving through the portal. Storr either the portal, or the NBA draft. Two more kids coming in from the Twin Cities area who are graduating from finesse basketball programs. These things are going to tear the Badgers up.

I don't know if Gard can hang on to Storr for another year, Blackwell, and McGee. He needs to build off those three, adding some guys who don't wilt as the season wears on.

The reason the Badgers fold every year is pretty simple. At the beginning of the year, officials call games tight. The Badgers are a finesse team, with finesse players. They can win those games. As the season wears on, and they hit the conference schedule, the game slowly becomes more physical every week. That's when the Badgers game goes away. They cannot play physically, and aren't taught by our coaching staff, to do it. We only have three who can do it, and Crowl has finally got the message and became a little more of a bully out there. He'll get more respect next year, but is it enough? It should have been there from day one, but Gard don't coach that kind of ball.

The biggest question we need to ask is if Gard's staff can recruit the kind of kids that can go out there and bloody noses, or are they going to all be more like Essegian, who's a great shot, but can't body up on someone and intimidate them. An example of someone who's learned somewhat how to do it, but was beaten down by the bruising game they brought to him is Klesmit. He can play solid in spurts, but he doesn't know how to play past the pain of taking a beat down every game. Next year, assuming he sticks around, could be better. He might leave with others, for a place where he can play more basketball, and not be asked to be part of the 4 corner waltz that Gard seems to think is still in vogue.

As for defense, Gard and his staff doesn't know how to develop the concepts, or to make changes on the fly, during games. They are way too "old school." They need to get a guy on that coaching staff who teaches these kids how to bang on the opposition constantly, without getting fouls called. But, that's probably not going to happen, unless Gard is sent packing.

Now, if Gard is fired. It's not going to stop the portal moves. In fact it could get worse. The only difference is, with the right coaches coming in, they could reach out and get a handful of guys who play with as much abandon as Storr. They're out there. Some earning their chops right now on the playgrounds in places like Baltimore, NYC, Detroit, LA, and Chicago.

Badgers need a new offense anyways. UW is not seen a a school a lot of kids want to go to and are at best a mid-tier if not lower tier school were you play within the system you will win 15-20 games a year but most likely you are not putting kids into the NBA and contending for a national title. The kids UW gets are the kids that don't have many if any other power 5 offers and WI is still a good school to get an education from.

A perfect analogy for the Gard teams is a bunch of players who are good at pillow fights taking those pillows to a street fight, where they use chains, clubs, blackjacks, and any other weapon they can carry. You pretty much know what the outcome will be before it starts.

That's why one look at the James Madison roster and you'll find a lot of kids with street smarts, and one, Bickerstaff, whose pedigree is in pro sports, including a grandfather who has NBA coaching skills. Rest assured, T.J. came to them with a board banging mentality, not as a pastry chef.

Don't Finesse teams make Free Throws and make layups - especially when it's needed in the clutch?

When you watch Wisconsin players driving the lane, only a few are willing to physically challenge the defenses. They do make the majority of theirs. The finesse players kind of shy away and throw the ball at the basket, not really take a shot.

Free throws frustrate the hell out of me to be honest. Even in HS, back in my day, a kid who hit 50-60% of his free throws was told to stay in the gym and shoot at least a 100 more after each practice. The coaches would assign a 2nd player to fetch for them, and after a while, if you were picked to fetch, you'd get on the guy about getting the damned ball in the hoop. Nobody who was getting real playing time wanted to deal with an idiot who couldn't make charity tosses.

Apparently, Bucky was 6 of 16 on laups in the game. I saw 3 missed layups in the last 5.

Agree with you on free throws. I don't understand how as a team we are consistently so bad - and how horrible we usually are during crunch time

Surprisingly, show up ready and wanting to play, hit your shots, make your layups and free throws and James Madison cab be beat.

We ain't Duke - but...

The first small domino falls. Sounds like Connor Essegian has entered the transfer portal. He needs to find a better fit where he won't need to play as much man to man defense where he gets exposed and where they'll run some offense specifically to get him open. Use the one thing he brings to the table - his shooting.

Like I've been saying right along. He was going to be the first one out the gate. It's just started.
