Official 2016 Week 5 Green Bay vs New York Giants Thread

How do we get off the snide? By changing coaches and/or getting different players OR have the players we have now - including #12 - just play better? If we do decide to change the coaching staff after this season and get a defensive minded HC don't we need to find an offensive coordinator who will run the same system MM is implementing now? Isn't it rather late to ask Rodgers to learn a new offense at this stage of his career?
Not really... many top QB have changed systems late. Honestly sometimes a system change can energize a player.

I don't see any problem for Rodgers. Any system a coach would bring in would be in tune with what Aaron can do, and do effectively. Good coaches know how to harness the talent of the players, not try to fit round pegs in square holes.

On defense, it might be a little more difficult for people like Matthews. But, with a hybrid 3-4 x 4-3, he might actually become a sure fire pick for the HOF. It would also create more options as to body types you need, to fill your needs.

Now, from a GM POV. I might want to keep Thompson. I don't really blame him for the problems on the field to be honest.

how so? if our primary issues are a lack of playmakers (as many have said) and a lack of depth (as many have said), it seems to me the gm is a major part of the problem.

If you look at the positions we've drafted, and the results we've gotten, it shows that Thompson has in fact picked some pretty good athletes. We can start with Rodgers, and add Matthews to that mix. We can't say his choices have been bad, unless we see a lack of talent on the field. Granted, he's made mistakes. They all do. I honestly don't see that his mistakes have been catastrophic. I see mis-managed personnel as being the problem.

I also look at his FA choices. Guys like Peppers, and Woodson. Not a great number, but no cap hell like I see with other teams.

The reason I think Thompson should get a little more time is because of the great job he did getting us out of cap hell after Sherman, without us turning into a doormat. That was of his making. Like him or not, as a GM, I have to give him the benefit of the doubt for a short period of time.

but c'mon tw, he's had how many drafts now? a dozen? and how many blue chip playmakers?

there was rodgers and matthews, sure. most teams have three to five on their active roster.

okay let's add nick collins to the list because i think he would have been one of the best ever if he had not had the freak injury.

maybe you could make a case for jordy nelson, but it's borderline at best.

and as for depth, if you look beyond our starting 22, most of our depth is comprised of rookies and undrafted free agents that we churn through every year. we have 11 guys on our 53-man squad who are not still on their rookie contract. yeah, sure we are not in trouble salry-cap wise. but this team relies heavily on unproven and undeveloped talent.

edit: actually there are 14 guys not on their rookie contracts. i forgot to include peppers, guion, and cook - who were all brought in as veterans.

I don't know how we are going to cover OBJ. I anticipate him receiving at least 125 yards tonight. As far as the game goes, I don't have a great feeling about it, but I could see it going either way.

That's an excellent point. I see it just a little differently, but I do agree. There aren't any, and I agree with Collins.

What I see is the Packers drafting in the lower six to eight picks in each round. That limits the opportunities of finding those top players. When you get one in a draft, he's usually in the top ten at most. When you pick as low as the Packers, you try to get guys that are good enough to improve your team in a key position, because the real impact players are already gone.

I borrowed the following: Thompson's draft picks

I've highlighted the guys I believe were solid picks for the round picked. People will disagree. That's good. Choose the ones you think are best. Remember what I said. Solid picks for the round they were picked.
