I wouldn't take anything away from last night's game except the fact that there were a lot of missed tackles by guys down the line on the depth chart. Take away Welch's INT, and he still played well out there. He was directing traffic, because he was more versed on the defense than the guys around him. He shows signs of being a potential 2nd level player. I think Hopper looked like he has something to offer. He just needs time on the field to develop it.
Our passing game. Clifford had 2nd and 3rd level personnel out there with him. It was ragged, but that needs to be expected against the Broncos #1 defense. Poor route running, horrible blocking, and the running game stuffed because the offensive line was porous. It's what we all should have expected, under the circumstances. Also, don't take anything bad away from either Clifford or Pratt. They did not have the talent out there to make their games look better.
Drops, drops, drops. Catch the damned ball! That's all I'll say about everyone who had the ball thrown to them. To the offensive line, if you don't know who you're supposed to block, at least get the guy in front of you. Don't leave him open to get into the backfield, while you try to figure out who you need to put pads on.
Bo Nix looked good because he didn't have to contend with our best defenders. If our best would have been out there against him, he would have looked pedestrian.
Caleb Jones. The guy belongs on defense, anchoring the center of the defensive line. He's huge. He was solid while in the game, as long as nobody used slick moves to get outside his blocks. They need to harness that nearly 400# at 6'9". He could be a disruption when on the field, because he's built like a freaking tank! If he was to develop faster footwork, and could slip to the side better, he would make a great LT, but I don't think they'll ever get that out of him because of his size.
I don't think LeFleur is a bit happy about his team's performance not only in the game, but in the Friday mano-a-mano practice, where the Broncos beat up on our guys like the proverbial red headed step child.
But, that's my opinion. It's going to be a tough week for the players, because Matt is going to demand a lot more out of all of them, even if they know they're camp fodder.
