If Rodgers plays 2023 and has not made up his mind about 2024. You can't sign Love and if Rodgers would retire after 2023 do you want to pay Love say 10-15 million even on a short say 2 year prove it deal or go draft a cheap rookie for 4-5 years?
Chances of 12 playing in GB in 2023 maybe 20% tops. 2024 zilch. And it’s not a matter of $10-$15m ifs about structure. And it’s also how you evaluate the QB class in 2023 and 2024 and maybe even 2025.
I think fair offer to Love if he has to wait until 2024 to play I offer 2 years $20 million with $15 guaranted at signing. $10 million SB with a $5 million 1st year salary guaranteed. At worst you cut him after one year with only $5 million dead cap or he plays well and you have a 2nd year were you can work on a contract ext without having to use a FT on him to keep him.
I’m not giving him a $1m base. And more than likely year 2-3 is a roster bonus.
Then if I were his agent I tell him we will consider your offer but will head to FA as we believe we could get more then that as a backup with other teams and that offer is insulting to be a planned starter. $1 million is less then he's making now why would he only take $1 million dollars to play for 1 year?
Let’s remember that both Love and Rodgers are repped by Athletes First. So yea Mulugheta has a pretty good idea of what the plan is. That said Love is a better position to maximize his earnings being a starter than a backup.
Still if I am going to be a starter I want starter money not money less then most backups get. IMO $10 million for 1 year is fair if expecting him to start for the season. As that is even on the low end for starters.
With what leverage and body of work? Fine give him a SB + salary to hit $1.5m. Again structure matters. Jimmy G is not at $10m APY, neither is Mariota.
As you say though bad QB pool. Any agent will laugh if you offer his client $1-1.5 million dollars to start at QB for the season. They will say you might as go and draft a day 3 pick and start them if you want to be that cheap. Only QB you get for that price are guys who are out of the league because they are not good.
