Doubs still had a chance to make the play, but the failure succinctly captures two separate issues. The first is that Doubs, or anyone but
maybe Lazard on his best day, is not capable of making that play right now. He just isn't good enough. The play is there to be made, tough as it is, but the Packers don't have a receiver they can turn to for that.
The second issue is that defenses know all Rodgers wants to do is rush the ball out of his hands, especially on fourth-and-short. Rodgers' 2.48s
time to throw is the second-lowest in the NFL, and his 6.6-yard average depth of target ranks 33rd out of the 38 quarterbacks with at least 50 attempts. Defenses know this is all the Packers have, and that's how a regular quick game concept ends up looking like a botched screen pass.
So long as the Packers are incapable of finding easier explosive plays, these are the margins they will be playing with. And so long as these are the margins the offense is playing with, the offense will not be good enough to get the team where it wants to be by January, especially if the defense continues to sputter
