Official 2020 Packers Training Camp Thread

2020 Camp Update: August 24th:

Practice Starts at: 10:30 AM CST

General:

  • No Pads Today
  • Today is going to be a slow, cool down day for the team.
Not Practicing: OL Rick Wagner (?), LB/S Raven Greene (?)

Injuries: DL Montravius Adams (Toe), RB Patrick Taylor (NFI), OL Simon Stepaniak (NFI), OL Yosh Nijman (PUP), LB Curtis Bolton (PUP), Greg Roberts (PUP), WR Devin Funchess (Opt-Out IR)

Offense:

  • Packers RT Rick Wagner still not practicing after leaving Lambeau practice early last Thursday. He is observing from the side.
  • Runyan is practicing despite being banged up at the end of yesterday's practice.
  • 11-on-11's are going to be at jog walk through speed today after yesterday's hard practice.
  • They finish with a 2-Minute jog-thru. Rodgers hit Lazard down the sideline. I think 12 tried a fake spike on the final play. You didn’t miss much.
Defense:

  • “Yeah, yeah, I’m back like I never left!” — Jaire Alexander as he jogs out to practice in a helmet after missing the last two practices.
  • Za’Darius Smith has helmet in hand and is joining after four missed practices.
  • Garvin is working out with a different position group than you might expect. But I can’t say which one.
  • Jaire and King trying to block each other on the sideline. Started as a bit of fun but gets pretty serious with neither wanting to give ground. They’re about to spill onto the field so Savage gives a heads up to get out of the way of the oncoming play. Call it a draw.
  • Greene is observing practice from the side.
Media:

Practice has ended at: 11:48 AM CST | 1 hour 18 minutes

yesterday's practice was a grueling one hour and 55 minutes. the previous one was 1 hour 25 minutes. today was just 1 hour 18 minutes. crazy. they have far less time to get ready this year than in normal years. but they show no sense of urgency.

But the zoom meetings taught so much! LOL

I don't mind it after how few injuries they had lsst year. #nottojinx

with a heat index in the low-mid 90’s today, ML may have thought it better to throttle back after a couple hard padded practices.
It’s going to be even warmer for the next 3-4 days, so maybe they needed a day not quite so intense

my point is not specific to today, but i guess it's hot and humid pretty much every day in wisconsin this time of year. but games are over three hours long and our guys are getting used to periods of physical activity that are less than half that. and let's face it the players are not active for the entire hour and a half (or less) that they are practicing. there's a lot of standing around and waiting your turn. i don't know . . . i'm not a coach, but it just seems like the limit of 2.5 hours per practice was already pretty short compared to past years.

Totally understand where you’re coming from rb.
I’m going to hope that ML knows his players tolerances better than I do and that what he does is part of a plan.

Camp Update: August 25th

Practice Starts at: 10:10 AM CST

General:

  • Full Pads Today
  • Today's practice is at Lambeau.
  • There will be live tackling today as well.
Not Practicing: OL Rick Wagner (Arm), LB/S Raven Greene (?)

Injuries: DL Montravius Adams (Toe), RB Patrick Taylor (NFI), OL Simon Stepaniak (NFI), OL Yosh Nijman (PUP), LB Curtis Bolton (PUP), Greg Roberts (PUP), WR Devin Funchess (Opt-Out IR)

Offense:

  • OL Rick Wagner is unpadded, but at least participating in some individual drills today.
  • LaFleur calls the team together to “make sure we’re all on the same page” about what’s expected today. There’s going to be hitting but coach reminds them to “Take care of each other”
  • Two of the PUP/NFI guys - Curtis Bolton and Patrick Taylor - running stadium stairs.
  • Lane Taylor continues to have a strong start to camp. Just bested Kenny Clark twice in 1x1’s. Absorbed a bull rush and inside speed move from Kenny Clark in back to back reps.
  • Patrick gets the best of Lancaster twice.
  • In 1-on-1 RB routes v LBs, J Williams got a step on Barnes on a deep over and Love lofted it in perfectly. But Williams dropped it. He let out a frustrated scream and immediately dropped to the ground for push ups.
  • Kumerow completely turned around Samuels on a post corner. Samuels went to the ground. Boyle missed him.
  • Runyan holds up pretty well against Hester.
  • Better in pass pro drill today from Dillon vs Burks but he ends up on the ground.
  • Jenkins wins with ease against Delontae Scott. 2x
  • Aaron Jones with a solid rep vs Kirksey in LB-RB blitz drill. Got a pat on the helmet from Kirksey.
  • Better all around from Dillon in pass pro drill today. Cleanly wins the second showdown with Burks.
  • Shepherd makes diving catch on ball thrown behind him w/ Savage in tight coverage.
  • Jordan Love great throw on a deep ball to Malik Taylor over Ka’Dar Hollman to end a coordinated 1-on-1 session. Probably best ball I’ve seen from him.
  • Jace Sternberger looked best of the TEs.
  • Lone deep TD came from Davante on a 40-yard catch with Stanford Samuels on him.
  • Aaron Jones, Kirksey split their pass rushing/blocking reps.
  • Begelton with a nice contested catch after Ento got a hand on the ball.
  • FB John Lovett hasn't quite connected with the QB's in the passing game much but he is getting good separation so far.
  • For a big guy, Elgton Jenkins is so athletic on his feet. Easily mirrored Dean Lowry on a pair of one-on-one reps. Rarely see Jenkins beat with speed, and he can still dig in against the bull.
  • First play of team drills and a pulling Marcedes Lewis just put Rashan Gary on his ass with a killer run block. Oh my goodness.
  • Aaron Jones with a really nice read on a run with a big hole generated by the left side of the offensive line. Really nice run and execution by the offense.
  • Adams finds a hole in the zone and newly found 2010 Rodgers zips a pass complete to Adams for a nice 15-yard pickup.
  • Boyle lasers one to Jake Kumerow over the middle for about 15.
  • Now he hits MVS in stride off of either a read or designated play action on a backside slant.
  • Boyle hits Shep over the middle but Ento either would have made a play on the ball or laid Shep out if it was truly live.
  • Boyle ends his session with a nice checkdown shallow cross to Dexter Williams who outruns Krys Barnes for a nice pickup.
  • Nice run blocking to the right as Jamaal Williams picks up a chunk.
  • Tonyan again with a great block on Rashan Gary and 2010 Aaron Rodgers hits Lazard down the field for a really nice gain. Wiiiide open on a deep corner route. Zone coverage. Rodgers on all cylinders early.
  • Now a low throw a tad behind Deguara. Rare off target for last few days.
  • Nice job by Dillon on the zone run. Lets it develop, puts his foot in the ground and bursts upfield. That looked like teaching tape. Defense just thudding, but an audible collision in the hole between Dillon and Summers. Tipa also in on the stop. 4 yard gain.
  • The more you see Tyler Ervin in this offense, the more his versatility is reminiscent of Ty Montgomery. Only, based on his return ability, Ervin might also have more pop. Matt LaFleur might just be the creative offensive mind to take full advantage too.
  • I’ve been skeptical, but Billy Turner has had a really nice camp so far and has had almost no issues in Rick Wagners absence.
  • Great blitz pickup from Aaron Jones allows Rodgers to find Adams on a quick out.
  • Rodgers throw out wide to Jones just now was picturesque. Led him perfectly so he never broke stride.
  • Nice back-shoulder ball from Boyle to EQ, who made a great catch going to the ground. About a yard shy of the sticks however, bringing up “4th Down.” Young Wr slips coming back but does a nice job concentrating and making the catch.
  • Nice adjustment on a catch by EQ on a throw from 12.
  • Jamaal Williams is having a nice day. Nice run to the right side followed up by a checkdown to the left side from 12. He also pulled an Aaron Jones: Just waved goodbye to a pair of defenders as he accelerated by for a long run. No fine for that in practice, I presume.
  • AJ Dillon is showing that he’s more than just a power guy today. Displayed great vision and a nifty cut to find daylight to the right side.
  • Jordan Love handles a slightly errant snap, looks left and finds Kumerow for about 10. Small steps from the rookie QB.
  • Rodgers to Adams has been money all camp. Offense backed up by its own goal line, Rodgers comes right out with play action to Adams on a curl. Out of the hole. King in coverage. Wasn’t horrible coverage, just well executed offense.
  • Jamaal Williams with a clean catch on the outside on a swing pass and a smooth move inside on the defender.
  • False start on the offense, couldn’t see who the main offender was.
  • 2010 Aaron Rodgers now hits Lazard up the seam. Whatever the hell he found on tape is working. Been a big day for Lazard. Just snuck through secondary again to find hole in seam. That was on 3rd and 7 too. 25+ yard gain or maybe a 77 yard TD even. Rodgers to Adams and Rodgers to Lazard looking season-ready in team drills.
  • Rough drop from Malik Taylor. Bit behind him, but Boyle was most likely trying to avoid the safety. Gotta catch that.
  • Kumerow was being attended to by trainers. But now has his helmet, and looks like he’s good to go.
  • Gorgeous throw from 12 to 17 on an 8 yard out route on 3rd and 7. Perfectly timed, thrown before Davante even cut. Jaire had no shot.
  • To recap: Aaron Rodgers dealing again today. He was 3-for-3 on 3rd down in move-the-ball drill: 33-yard completion to Allen Lazard on 3-7, 11-yard completion to Davante Adams on 3-9, and 9-yard completion to Aaron Jones on 3-6. The ball to Lazard came after a false start to set up 3-long.
  • Offense the clear winner in team drills to this point in practice.
  • Rodgers has to check it down and turns around and gives Pettine a round of applause for the coverage called.
  • Rodgers with a rare miss. Had Aaron Jones downfield with a step but Rodgers overthrew it.
  • Rodgers. Adams. End zone. Touchdown. Perfect throw from Rodgers to Adams for a 19-yard TD leaping over Alexander on a corner route. Great coverage. Perfect ball and amazing catch. Adams threw the ball in the stands in celebration and flexed.
  • On the sideline Rodgers fist bumped around but didn’t see Patrick Taylor & left the rookie hanging, who smoothly gave himself some pounds before Davante Adams took him off the hook.
  • Boyle and Rodgers both dealing today. Boyle to Taylor with Samuels in tight coverage.
  • AJ Dillon with a drop on a simple crossing route. Hands have been solid in camp, but that was wide open and could have been a TD. They settle for a FG instead.
  • MVS wide open in the end zone but Rodgers sees him late and under-throws the ball - incomplete. Walked over to MVS for a ‘my bad’ fist tap. They settle for a FG.
  • Boyle with back to back incompletions in 2 minute - both high throws (he’s human apparently). One to Taylor one to Deguara.
  • Boyle makes up for the incompletions with a nice throw to Taylor on 3rd down to lift the chains.
  • Boyle takes a shot to Turner on his next throw but they aren’t on the same page. Incomplete.
  • Boyle drops off to Dillon for a gain of 7.
  • Rodgers start 2 minute drill with a nice completion to MVS over the middle on a slant.
  • Now Aaron Jones with a nice pickup on a screen. Great start for the offense.
  • Now misses MVS on a cross.
  • Rodgers incomplete on 4th down. Adams not on the same page. Rodgers overthrows Adams by 10 yards after Adams comes back on it while Rodgers evidently thought he’d keep going. Without specifying language, both seemed frustrated after the play. Defense wins that 2 minute.
  • Practice is over for the veterans. Young guys get extra work.
  • Love goes deep up the left sideline to Sternberger. Would have been a big hit from the safety if this was a game but nice play from two young guys. Tipa might have had a sack on the play.
  • Now Love with a second straight completion. This time to Taylor over the middle.
  • Love to Sternberger on an out who turns it up field for a nice gain. Those two on the same page in this last period. Tim Williams might have had a sack on this one.
  • Jordan Love is looking much more sharp in this period. 3/3 61 yards.
  • Jordan Love doing his best Aaron Rodgers...by getting the defense to jump. Great hard count gets the offense a free first down.
  • Nice run by Dexter Williams who slips a Tipa tackle.
  • Love having a nice end of practice today. Just hit Deguara over the middle with Burks in tight coverage.
  • Love overthrows Taylor to end the day.
Defense:

  • Jaire and Z are both in pads today. Raven Greene & M. Adams remain sidelined.
  • WR vs DB 1v1: Jaire stayed stride-for-stride on Adams, and picked off Rodgers along the right sideline on his first rep. Took it back the other way. (We all need more Jaire in the open field.)
  • Randy Ramsey with a nice rush against Alex Light to the outside. Light wins round 2.
  • Gary lightning fast around Leglue 2x. Two easy wins.
  • Keke blows past Conway. Conway wins round 2.
  • Nice rep from Burks vs Dillon in one on one coverage drill. Burks always looks smooth in coverage.
  • I’m giving a win to Previlon against Hanson.
  • Tim Williams with 2 wins.
  • Tipa with 2 wins vs Zach Johnson. Easy.
  • Two good reps from Chandon Sullivan. First, got beat deep by Lazard but recovered and broke it up. Then, stayed with Ervin on a double-move (not easy) to force incompletion.
  • Z beasts Patrick but Patrick stuffs him round 2.
  • Garvin and Runyan was a fun matchup. Giving the win to Garvin.
  • Light wins vs. Ramsey who slips. Ramsey uses his hands well and wins round 2.
  • Martin came off limping after rep v D Williams but got back in and appears OK. Williams held his own nicely.
  • Tipa is absolutely abusing Zach Johnson.
  • Gary with an easy win against Conway not Conway bounced back for win in round 2 for a cheer from the OL.
  • Previlon with a win to end 1x1s.
  • CB Kabion Ento just dropped out of practice and is heading to the locker room.
  • First throw of team, Lowry would have had a sack. Rodgers tried to dump it off, incomplete.
  • Kenny Clark with a nice stop of Jamaal Williams.
  • Randy Ramsey a bit shaken up but he seems ok.
  • Ty Summers fills the gap nicely. No gain for Crockett.
  • Za’Darius is being an absolute nuisance making noise on the defense’s sideline during team drills. First-Team All-Camp Heckler.
  • Rashan Gary scoots around Alex Light for what would have probably been a sack on third down.
  • Nice stop inside on a run from Lancaster and Burks.
  • Willington Previlon is shaken up and off to the side talking to a trainer. Now going to the locker room.
  • Kenny Clark comes bursting through between the C and RG for another would-be sack on Rodgers to end the period.
  • With offense backed up, Kirksey wants some noise.
  • Nothing doing for Jamaal Williams. Defense wins that one.
  • Oren Burks shot out of a cannon on a blitz. Looks like he would have had a sack of Boyle in the end zone for a safety.
  • Josh Jackson made a play to stop Tim Boyle‘s drive on third-and-9. Sat on Reggie Begelton’s route underneath, reached around to knock away pass without making contact. Jackson having a solid camp.
  • Great job by Keke shedding a block and shutting down a Dillon run for a TFL/possible safety. Kingsley Keke is having a nice camp. Impressive in the pass rush too.
  • A couple of nice run stops by the defense on Jones. Kirksey made the first stop.
  • Willington Previlon is out of the locker room and has his helmet on. Looks ready to go. We’ll see if he returns.
  • Rashan Gary with a little pressure working against Bakhtiari. That’s the closest DB has come to allowing a pressure that I’ve seen.
  • Now Gary with a “sack” against Billy Turner. By my count, that’s three sacks Rashan Gary would’ve had in team drills today if tackling the quarterback was allowed.
  • Kamal Martin shoots through the line, and stuffs Jamaal Williams behind the line. That rookie has flashed. I think the Packers found a player in Kamal Martin.
  • Now Kamal Marting stopped Deguara on a screen.
  • Jonathan Garvin sack on Boyle.
  • Nice fill by Ty Summers on a run in red zone. Nice day from Ty Summers today. He’s been in on numerous “tackles.”
  • Martin avoids Dexter Williams pickup for a “sack” of Love, forced an incompletion on the pass. Got some love from Christian Kirksey when he came off the field. He just keeps making plays. He does not look like a rookie.
  • Stanford Samuels almost (and should have) picked off Jordan Love in the end zone. Bad throw by Love to Ervin on an under route near the goal line.
  • Randy Ramsey just fell to the ground and is now being looked at by trainers. Hopefully he’s ok - he’s been having a nice camp. After being looked at, he walks off under his own power. Now headed to the locker room.
  • Samuels with a nice blitz off the edge.
  • Samuels INT off of Boyle to stop the two minute drive. Pass was tipped at the line. Defense wins that round with a nice turnover.
  • Rodgers throws the ball right to Adrian Amos but Amos drops it. Lucky break for the offense.
  • Rodgers low on a checkdown to Adams. Some pressure from Gary vs. Bakhtiari.
  • Rodgers tried to hit Davante up the seam but is lucky Kirksey can’t hang on. Should have been an INT.
  • Toss right to Dillon but it’s completely smothered. Tackle AJ Dillon at your own risk. Garvin made the nice play but he was the slower to get up of the two.
  • Love finds Deguara in the flat but Burks is right there to meet him along with Vernon Scott.
  • Love feels some pressure and throws a 50/50 ball up for Lovett off play action; Vernon Scott comes down with an INT. Bad ball by Love but a great play by Scott.
  • Krys Barnes got around Dexter Williams to create some pressure.
  • Oren Burks stuffs AJ Dillon in the hole. No gain. Nice play by 42.
  • Another gamble by Love throwing late over the middle is almost picked off by a diving Oren Burks.
Special Teams:

  • *Real punts*, not JUGS punts, for JK Scott inside of Lambeau today.
  • JK Scott has looked great in punting period. Nine bombs and two stinkers for JK Scott in a punting period from his own 25: 51.5-yard average/4.52 hang. Worst one came under pressure (36 yards/3.46). But had 5 of 55+ ranging from 4.35 to 4.72.
  • Crosby 2/4 in team drills. Bad snap by Bradley and Crosby misses the extra point, then missed a 48 yard FG.

Practice has ended at: 12:27 PM CST | 2 hours 17 minutes

Next event is: Practice | August 27th | 10:30 AM CST

Press Conference Notes:

  • Matt LaFleur on Aaron Rodgers: "I like how he's playing right now. He's very decisive. He's letting it rip and he's extremely accurate."
  • Matt LaFleur on vibe in this unusual training camp: "This training camp is certainly unique. It reminds me of my tie in college ball, because you're going against yourself each and every day." LaFleur says he's thinking of ways to implement team building too.
  • Big smile when Kamal Martin asked how the knee that bothered him last season at Minnesota, and required surgery, feels. He says it's been good since around draft time. It's shown on the field during practice.
  • Jason Wilde accidentally mentions that Kamal has gotten a lot of work with the 1's in his question during the presser...I don't think he's supposed to do that.
  • Jon Runyan Jr. said he hopes he's not being annoying to the veteran O-linemen like Bakhtiari, Taylor and Turner. Been trying to listen in on every conversation they have and watch every move they make.
  • Rookie G Jon Runyan said he has learned all the offensive line positions but all of his reps have been at left guard and that it has felt very natural for him after playing on the left side at Michigan.
  • Runyan on Kamal Martin: "He's a downhill linebacker. He's going to throw his body weight at you. He's fast. He can run sideline to sideline."
  • Jon Runyan Jr. played with Rashan Gary at Michigan and trained with him this summer: “He’s setting himself up for a spectacular second year.”
