Blake Bortles

Fully expected them to sign a QB regardless ... they needed a camp and OTA arm. 100%, not a Rodgers replacement. You need 3 QB in camp to run all your drills and to keep your starter fresh.
Agree they need a camp arm and if Love stinks up the joint so bad you might want Bortles as your #2 if Rodgers stays and well if he leaves.....

The team let their vet backup - Tim Boyle - walk in FA. That left Rodgers and Love as the only QBs on the roster. Packer brass acknowledges the dispute with Rodgers and that he's not going to participate in OTAs etc because of either contentious contract negotiations, or because he won't be on the team. That leaves Love as the only QB. They need arms, and they don't want to be limited by having only inexperienced QBs to run the installs for everyone, they want a veteran and preferably one who is familiar with at least some of what ML is doing, hence Gute's comments about wanting a vet.

I agree with Pack above, if the Rodgers thing is settled, Bortles gets cut and Love is the back up. If he gets traded, then Love is your presumed starter with Bortles as the backup.
Thing is I don't think Boyle was a quality starter. Packers would have needed to look for a better backup if Rodgers was leaving.

Good move, not a great one. Got a vet that ML is bit familiar with. AR or no AR, still need as others said another arm for camp.

AR isn't the iron man Favre was and is older. Insurance against injury if AR gets hurt. Of course if he stinks up the joint then my LOT is mute.

In all honesty, I believe the Packers were looking for a veteran QB long before this Rodgers thing came to a head. I believe they intend utilizing Love in the preseason, and only on an emergency basis during the year. Bortles was a good choice for back-up, to insure Love gets a chance to develop into the offense. Of course that can change if they see that Love is ready to step up and be the #2.

I think they're at least smart enough to realize that Love taking the field replacing Rodgers is an extremely difficult task. Better to have a journeyman QB that is expendable to do the heavy lifting during transition, for hold out, trade, or injury with Rodgers.

To me Bortles is below meh. I would not be shocked if at the end of TC Packers find a better vet QB who's cut and dumb Bortles.

If 12 is on the roster they won’t carry 3 QB’s. Probably on on PS but that’s it. Roster management

And one additional point. If Love is QB3 on the roster the organization has publicly admitted its mistake, that’s unlikely to happen

Thing is if he looks horrible in TC and pre-season can you say he's a legit 2 and not just because he's a draft pick he is.

All depends on what love looks like two this is his first real chance to learn the offense and get some quality snaps.
