I've read a couple of articles that indicate that the Packers may not have signed Bortles as a potential replacement for Rodgers, should he leave, but as a 3rd QB on the roster, and the 2nd with experience.

I found that kind of confusing to be honest. Why? If Love was anywhere near being a potential QB this year, he could be the #2 behind Rodgers, and at least get enough snaps in camp, preseason, and practice, to understand his role. Bringing on an experienced QB like Bortles seems to indicate that he'd be the #2, and Love would remain the #3 for another year. If this is the case, there's not much trust in Love actually being close to being an NFL QB.

Scary situation if Rodgers leaves.

Oh well! Time marches on.

Gute said weeks ago they planned to sign a vet QB. Not sure why this is a surprise or new news

I think they believed things could play out the way they have, and were already planning on it early this year. Bortles may actually be the best choice out there. He seems to be the type of guy who can learn the system fast.

The fact remains, if they thought Love had reached a point they trusted him, they would have elevated him to #2, and looked for a FA who would be willing to sit at #3.

If Rodgers stays Bortles gets released. It’s basically roster protection and another arm assuming 12 does not report

You're trying to have this both ways. First, that they had already planned on getting an experienced QB on the roster. That was before this thing blew up. Now you're saying they are signing him because Rodgers might not show up.

Which is it? It can't be both to settle a disagreement.

I still believe they intended bringing in a vet who could step in for Rodgers, even if injured. That they still don't trust Love as the #2, and won't be able to make that decision until after the preseason. If he ain't ready, Bortles would be #2, and Love wouldn't dress again this year, except in emergency. If he is ready, Bortles could go, but don't count on it. There's always the question of Rodgers being traded right up until the season starts, in my opinion.

As for choosing Bortles? I think it was a good choice. He's a decent enough QB who is quick to learn, and could be a fairly adequate field manager.

Fully expected them to sign a QB regardless ... they needed a camp and OTA arm. 100%, not a Rodgers replacement. You need 3 QB in camp to run all your drills and to keep your starter fresh.

The team let their vet backup - Tim Boyle - walk in FA. That left Rodgers and Love as the only QBs on the roster. Packer brass acknowledges the dispute with Rodgers and that he's not going to participate in OTAs etc because of either contentious contract negotiations, or because he won't be on the team. That leaves Love as the only QB. They need arms, and they don't want to be limited by having only inexperienced QBs to run the installs for everyone, they want a veteran and preferably one who is familiar with at least some of what ML is doing, hence Gute's comments about wanting a vet.

I agree with Pack above, if the Rodgers thing is settled, Bortles gets cut and Love is the back up. If he gets traded, then Love is your presumed starter with Bortles as the backup.

They have to look at the idea that 12 holds out and they only have 1 QB on the roster. 1 arm is not an option when you open camp. I’m not and I’m sure the organization does not want some rookie UDFA as the backup.

It’s a win win. If Rodgers holds out or gets traded you have a FA option. If Rodgers stays it’s a no risk move.

and if love gets traded, we have a veteran backup for rodgers.
