According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets “haven’t spoken much in the last week” about a trade that would send four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers to the Big Apple.
Schefter used the words “stalled” and “standoff” about the state of negotiations.
Trade compensation is at the heart of the matter. The Jets don’t want to give up their first-round pick, No. 13 overall. The Packers want that pick “and that’s not all,” Schefter said.
The Only thing with that for the Jets is that is Arod only plays one year and then says I retire (he was 90% this year remember) than giving up picks next draft for a guy that only plays a year kinda screws them. Only way I see that as a benefit to the Jets is if those picks are conditional 3rd round or later.Reality tells me that neither the Packers nor the Jets will move forward with a deal until after the June deadline, when the Packers can move millions of dollars of cap money into the second year, on Rodgers.
Both teams benefit. The Packers, on cap space, and the Jets, by giving up picks from next year, not this year. It could even sweeten the pot for the Packers to a degree, because of it. The Jets might be willing to up their offer somewhat.
Anyhow, that's the logic I see behind the delay. I say this because I get the sneaking suspicion there's already a deal, in principle, already in place. Just needs the details sorted out.
Actually it doesn't screw them. They'd get the benefit in advance, and pay for it later. Kind of "credit thing." That could also create a scenario where if there were multiple picks, one or more could be conditional, based on whether or not he returns for a second year with them. The Only thing with that for the Jets is that is Arod only plays one year and then says I retire (he was 90% this year remember) than giving up picks next draft for a guy that only plays a year kinda screws them.
