What people fail to understand is that players want contracts based on their past performances. That's used by them to project what they call their "potential for the future."
As a GM, you're hearing that, but you're trying to look at the future, not the past. Too many things can happen, including the player spending the next contract on the IR list more than on the field.
Of course in the process of negotiations, the player is always cognizant of the fact that they want that guaranteed money because it means everything is fine, if they can no longer perform like they did in the past, for any reason.
