2021 Badgers Football Thread

Well kids need to learn to live with a commiment they make if they want to change school there is a price to be paid. I say they should only get to leave free is if HC leaves or they school gets punished in some way that is not their fault.
But its OK for a school to pull a scholarship to make room for a kid your recruiting? Whats the commitment there? Sure just leave a kid hostage because he wanted to play closer to home or a better opportunity to play

I don't agree with that either schools should have to honor it but issues on both sides

I don’t like keeping any kid hostage either if they want another opportunity. What if your position coach leaves? Why not let the kid out? What if it’s a QB or RB and new OC changes system and your not a fit? The NCAA does nice lip service to caring about kids but only changed when their back was up against the wall. And the portal is not some guaranteed thing either it comes with risks

So kids should just be able to leave free and clear if they made a commitment to the school and leave the school hanging also?

coaches can, OC’s or DC’s leave. HC’s get million dollar buy outs to leave and let the program hang don’t they. But let’s punish the player when changes are made and make him sit for a year. Brilliant

Yeah and these kids are getting paid in form of free schooling.

Yeah it’s such a benefit NIL legislation is here and the NCAA has done squat with it. But yeah because your getting an education sit your ass here or sit out a year but it’s fine to let Jimbo to leave FSU for millions but that’s ok with no damage. Then let’s make coaches stay for the duration of their contract

This does touch on the fringe of the topic. You can poo-poo all you want about how they need NIL or some form of payment, but let's remember the actual cost of a college education. That said, the rules around college athletes are quite archaic, and while I don't agree with paying them, allowing them some stipend seems reasonable.

However, having a player transfer to another school indicates that it is almost always ALL about football and that they really don't care much about their education - because changing schools means much more than just a new football team, it's a whole new educational curriculum. And since the majority of these guys aren't going pro - you would hope they would be more invested in their free education.

Football yes but also there are kids who wanted to play closer to home, closer to family and yes closer to GF. Unless a kid has a some specific major the curriculum is not a drastic change.

As to pay, even before NIL kids got stipends with not much but it was something. I am not in favor of play or pay to be clear but when a institution and / or conference makes millions and kids cant reap something from it I am fine with it. NIL while not perfect is better than the alternative now

Let me try this one more time, Mertz:

He played in a spread look, a very simple one from 7th grade until a senior in HS. Everything was simple in his offense. Now in Kansas 5A there isn't a ton of speed he had to deal with on defense, the looks weren't super complex.

So not a 5-7 drop guy at all, Yes he threw some nice balls on film but again consider the talent factor.

Now fast forward to this season and last, super-fast pace( in terms of defensive looks), an OL that doesn't block in pass pro better than Madison West, WR that can't separate and run just meh routes. And a run game the first 4 weeks that was non-existent.

So no, the "it's in his head" is incorrect. It's the culmination of the things above. He needs better coaching, a much better group of WR, and an OL that can hold longer than 2 seconds in pass pro. If you don't fix the last two then I don't care who's behind center they will struggle.
