The first one got deleted before my coffee kicked in:

Interesting first preseason game, the rust was there on both sides so a very poor gauge on where we are at really. I am impressed with Tim Boyle the most. His arm and accuracy in a pro set make him valuable... how everyone else missed on him will be asked.

The defensive scheme was weird at times with a lot of unequal fronts. MP really really wants to play cover 1 all the time but Mark thinks he gets canned if he tries that with these corners all season... bold prediction #1.

Please repost your thoughts while I go caffeinate further.

Even though Hundley made some plays, I just don't trust him. I liked the way Kizer kept looking to make something out of nothing. My impression of Hundley was that he was content to take what he was given and not think outside the box.

I thought Kumrow, St. Brown and Valdez-Scantling all showed promise.

I was not impressed with the defense in the 1st half but they are a work in progress and had some moments in the 2nd half.

He played very vanilla. You pointed out two LB blitzes in the first half. I saw one CB blitz in the 2nd half, Pipkins came in and batted down a pass at the LOS.

My understanding is limited, but to play effective cover 1 don't you usually need technique savvy CBs and a very fast FS?

There was good and bad. Burks was around the ball. He showed his ability sniffing out that screen. He havent seen that from ilb.
Young wr group showed promise. The rooks made some plays. Kumerow did his thing. Imo davis is done and there will be a tough cut.

Way to many flags. I knkw the refs are in preseason mode also but damn its getting bad

it was about what I would expect from two teams playing their first preseason game after one week of training camp. both teams played sloppy football. nothing resembled a "well-oiled machine". the only highlights of the game for me were the performance of three rookie receivers: v-s, esb, and kumerow. . . and my first real look at boyle was encouraging although by the time he was in the game we were probably looking at defensive players that won't even make the titans team. I don't think we're going to have a realistic sense of what to expect on defense until the regular season. everything is vanilla and we're mostly looking at different combinations of players than what we will see in season.

OK so did a re-watch at lunch, tried to focus on some individual DL and OL:

  • Kenny Clark only played a bit, but he was a man among boys. Held off double teams, they even went after him once with a triple and he still hung in just swatting guys around. Love this guy, not even 23 years old yet. Sheesh.
  • A lot of reps for Montravius Adams, early and often. I thought he was just OK. You can see the quickness and he beat his man a few times, but he also got singled blocked and turned out of position too often I thought. To be fair this is the most work he's gotten since god knows when, it was a humid night and he played a lot of snaps so he probably got worn out eventually.
  • Next man in after Clark, Adams and Lowry was Joey Mbu, who got a lot of playing time. I thought he was worse than Adams frankly, he seemed to play high a lot for NT.
  • Next they started mixing in James Looney, IMO he showed some twitch and burst, he can rush a little bit but he's short and not that big. I don't know where he fits into the whole thing.
  • Then came Connor Sheehy. Quick, a LOT of energy, always seemed to be around the ball. There were a number of snaps though where they ran some screens or misdirection so he'd come flying through only for the ball to be out and on its way.
  • Last guy to be mixed in was Lancaster. Poor Tyler, first rep he got pancaked. It was better after that though. To me he was the only guy besides Clark who stayed consistently square and low against double teams. Seems like a natural NT. He even had one play where he bull-rushed the C or G into the QB's lap, causing a high throw.
As for OL:

  • Kyle Murphy got a lot of work exclusively at LT. He had one bad rep against Landry where Landry beat him with a speed rush, and another rep where he either tripped or lunged way outside. Other than that though, and maybe I'm crazy, I thought he held up just fine. Nothing dominating about him at all, he just kinda sat down and did his job all night.
  • Byron Bell got the start at RT over Spriggs, and boy I don't know what their plans are for him. He's gotta be best used on the inside but they have some interior depth, and he was not good at RT. I thought he was slow and grabby. Not a good start for him.
  • Spriggs replaced Bell for the second half and stayed at RT. When Murphy went out, Alex Light replaced him at LT. This is my first time seeing him in action since last year. He is noticeably bigger and it's not fat. he actually looks more like an NFL OT now. He had one bad holding call.
Other general thoughts:

  • I'm probably too much of a stickler for this, but I hated Kizer's body language. Every time he was on camera it looked like he had a full diaper. He'd complete a pass, there would be a penalty on the D, and he'd be shaking his head, frowning and sulking. Energy! Lead the offense! Come on.
  • Boyle was impressive. If the defense gave him 4.1 seconds to make a throw, he'd take 4 seconds to stand in there and make it. Compare to Hundley and Kizer, who seem to bail out at 3.5s.
  • I also liked the quality of Boyle's throws. One third and ten he threw that patented Jordy Nelson outside route right at the sticks to Kumerow for the first. He had one particular incompletion to Moore but it was a Rodgers like throw IMO - it was a throw to the goal line, and Boyle threw it low backshoulder, something I've seen Rodgers do a couple times. Reminded me of the AR to RR TD against Dallas in the playoffs two years ago, except Moore bobbled and dropped this one.
  • Boyle also had some misses. There were a few that sailed on him. He's really gotta work on consistency if he wants to climb the ladder.
  • Finally, MVS had a big night receiving, and if he goes 5 for 100+y and a TD in another game they won't be able to cut him, but he looks very slender to me, and I wonder how he'll really hold up when he needs to physically compete down after down. Kumerow didn't get much done until late but he looks built to take NFL punishment.

Whew, alright, that's all I got for this one. Oh! And remember if you're over 50, you can ask your doctor about a free sample of Cologuard.

Hundley the guy is going into 4th year has zero pocket awaraness. A QB has to be able to know when pressure is coming and get rid of the ball or get out of pocket. Instead Hundley stands there staring down his WR and gets blindsided because he has no idea what's going on around him. I know a lot of people were saying he played good but to me he still shows why he is not a capable backup and needs to go.

I agree with R and Mark about Boyle. He may not be ready for primetime yet, but his pocket awareness, calmness, arm, accuracy, reads, etc... he has a lot of things you can't teach. He looked very comfortable running the offense for an UDFA.. Case in point that long bomb to Kumerow, scanned def, read def, knew exactly what he wanted to do, snap the ball and launched a perfect pass to Kumerow where only Kumerow was going to get it. It's impressive. He also had another couple passes where he stood in the pocket and got the throw off before taking a hit. he's got good timing... He needs work, but I guarantee a lot of teams are reviewing their pre-draft rankings/notes on this kid after last night.

Part of teams passing on him may be that he switched between a few smaller schools in college. So maybe people just weren't comfortable with him. he's still a little raw, but the tools are there. He's not going to come in and save GB is Arod goes down this year, so need Kizer, but a few years down the road when GB really has to seriously look at Arods replacement? Maybe...

the WR's are very raw, but there might be something to work with. Only problem is how long will it take Arod to ignore them once they drop a pass and run a wrong route and hyper focus on Graham and Adams.

rofl( i think i had that commercial memorized by the end.

I just rewatched the game as well.
Expanding on what rp had to say:
Kiser is late on his reads constantly. Also, he is very jittery in the pocket. Does not set his feet. When he does, he actually throws pretty well and has a strong arm. Lastly, he is impatient in the pocket. He had numerous WRs coming open but he was moving out of the pocket too soon and looking to run. He has ability but has a long way to go.
Boyle has talent. One game, I know but you can usually tell about a QB fairly quickly. He has such pocket presence. On numerous throws, he stood in there until the last second. If he would have not stood in, he would have missed numerous WRs for completions as Kiser did. Example, the long pass to Moore. He was drilled but he threw a perfect pass to Moore 50 yards. Rocket arm just needs to work on accuracy consistency and getting reps.
