true, but the way it was executed was foolhardy from the beginning. first they sign rodgers to a huge contract extension, and then just a few months later they draft his replacement. they created their own mess.
Well, first the extension was part of the plan - keep Rodgers around through his productive years while grooming a successor. Second, it wasn’t a few months later it was 2 years.

he was going to be a UFA in 2020 and the way the contract was structured they had a easy "out" after the 2022 season. From a business perspective it actually was structured right
 
Can't trade him before June 1 unless you would have cut 2-3 big-name players with him. The cap hit was out of this world and AR knew it.

Right, the central issue is that Rodgers just doesn’t want to be told when his time in GB is over, he wants to be the one to dump the team, not the other way around.
 
If Rodgers does decide to sit out, doesn't his contract remain intact, except the whole thing moves back a year?
I think he "retires" he gets put on the reserve/retired list and his contract sits untouched until he reports back
