James Starks re-signs

I am a little surprised at the size of this contract. Almost twice what he got in the last contract. In 2014 he signed for two years $3.25 million. This one, 2 years $6 million.

Once again, the details tell the real story of Starks' contract.

It's essentially a 1-year deal with a team option for year two.

Just 1.5M guaranteed outta a theoretical 6M deal is the key. By far the lowest guarantees of any RB at or above his average per year.

Year 1: Cap hit 2.25M, cash paid 3M
Year 2: Cap hit 3.75M, cash paid 3M. Cap saving if cut: 3M (750k dead cap).

2.25M cap hit this year isn't a huge overpay for a guy who had 993 total yards from scrimmage last season. Starks will probably have to earn the starting spot to stay for 2017. He's easily cuttable for 3M cap relief, if we choose to.

true. it's not a huge overpay. still, it's an overpay.

starks had his best season ever, but that was due at least in part to the fact that lacy showed up for work overweight and out of shape and starks was asked to do more than he otherwise would have been. but you have to tip your hat because for the most part he delivered. the fumbles were a bit much, but not absolutely horrible. he averaged 4.1 yards per carry, which is pretty decent (there were seven guys in the top 20 running backs who were the same or worse).

Love it, this forum has a resident who understands how the NFL salary cap works! Thanks Salmar.

I view the Starks signing as insurance for Lacy, because would people really feel comfortable with only a rookie and Crockett behind Eddie given his conditioning and durability issues?
Starks has always been reliable when not thrust into the #1 workhorse back role.

I don't think knowing the intricacies of the cap is necessary in order to enjoy football, but it sure as heck makes understanding contracts and the way TT operates easier.

Usually the first news about any contract come from "a league source" = the agent. And they always publicize the biggest looking number, and hide the weakness. Like in Starks' case "6M for two years!", woweee! Even if it's essentially a one year deal with second year being totally at the team's mercy.

2017 cap hits for these three extensions look daunting:
Stark - $3.75 mil
Guion - $3.72 (rounded)
Taylor - $2.7
Total: $10.17M ("EEEK!!! OH NO!!! HOW ARE WE GONNA SIGN ANY UFAs IN 2017!!!rt(")

But look at the cap space saved if we draft better/cheaper replacements and cut those three:
Starks - 3M saving, 750k dead money
Guion - 3.33M saving, 333k dead money
Taylor - 2.4M saving, 300k dead money
Total: 8.73M more cap space, and just 1.38M in dead money. ("WHEE!! WE CAN SIGN ANYONE! bouncy")
