RB Jones back to Pack?

OK, having slept on it, I still don't really like it.

With that out of the way, it's kinda sounding like the CAP hit isn't crippling this year or maybe even next year, so it's not a complete financial disaster. As "Pack" says, lets see the final structure of the deal.

I'd still have much preferred a deal with Linsley, but maybe they have a plan. (Hey, a guy can dream.) Maybe they plan to play Jenkins at C, and are bringing back Taylor at a minimum deal and they feel that the trio of Patrick, Taylor and Runyan can man the inside. I could maybe see them bringing back Veldheer to start at RT for a half dozen games next fall and drafting a rookie as depth at OT.

That's a lot of wishful thinking. Not super high on trusting Veldheer to hold up for half a season as the starter. Still would have preferred a combo of Linsley and JWilliams as guys to return to the fold next year but I won't judge it all that harshly anymore until April 24th when we should have a pretty good idea of the group we'll be heading into the season with.

The counter point to Linsley is, the man has taken a beating over the years and had his best year in a walk year. If you want to talk about GB overvaluing its own, what would you think of them committing Top 3 OC money to Linsley in that scenario?

Can't disagree completely rp, but did we ask the same question with BakhT? Same age, roughly the same number of snaps. I worry a little more about a fall off the cliff decline for a RB than with an OC. Plus, with Jones, you just drafted a RB in Rd 2 so it seems like you are more set at RB, especially if you can get JWilliams back than you are along the OL.

Hell, maybe they'd be better off with neither of them and they'd have been better off spending that money at CB.

I was playing devil's advocate a bit for the sake of discussion. I believe that any org that values a RB over OL has left the path of wisdom.

To me as a team there are 3 key investment positions, QB, LT & pass rush (LB/DE). After that it’s priorities and RB is in the bottom 3rd of that wish list. So yeah Bak needed to get done especially when you have an elite guy like 12

Without a doubt I go with the thought that your first move should be a group of linemen who can give your QB PROTECTION. Guys who can block well enough to open holes for cars to drive through ( exaggerating ). However Jones does bring something special to the table. A RB who can run extremely well and catch well/and run. So I am not sorry to see Jones returning.
I just would like to see GB get a good/very good edge rusher to pressure QBs to go along with Z.Smith. CBs in the draft. Clearly good rushers help CBs and Safeties come up with rushed throws.

Packers re-sign RB Aaron Jones (4 years, $48 million): C Grade
Aaron Jones is a tremendous talent, and he's only 26. Aaron Rodgers will be happy to have Jones around for four more years, or however long Rodgers remains in Green Bay.

That said, I can't get behind this signing. Giving big money to running backs, even great ones like Jones, often backfires. Also, this signing makes the A.J. Dillon second-round pick from last year seem futile. Dillon will be the No. 2 back with Jamaal Williams entering free agency, but the Packers could have gained some serious leverage by having their starting running back on a very cheap rookie deal. Instead, they'll be dedicating a big chunk of change to a position that is easily replaceable.

And in a draft that is weak for edge rushers it’s a slim shot. Beating a dead horse but his numbers don’t scream big $$, add in his durability issues and other needs RB is / should not be a priority

Spot on. As I've said elsewhere - I love the player, love what he's brought and what he brings. I can also never in my mind justify that kind of second contract at all, never mind in the cap and roster position they're in.

Maybe I got this wrong, probably but here’s my theory.

The organization has already decided to move this offense to a “run centric” offense with a 2 headed tandem of Dillion and Jones. Next move is to cut bait on 12 after 2021 (more likely 2022) and hand it over to Love. Gives them a QB on cheap rook money, and frees up cap and cash. They drafted TE, have Big Bob at TE and have also not invested in WR.

Maybe I’m reading to much into this but ....
