Post Game Thread: Lions Upset Green Bay At Home

Cobb and Adams didn't talk to the media post-game. Only James Jones did. So much for Cobbs leadership role! Same for Adams, who apparently lost his voice barking at the refs. Seems like a soft group. Maybe that's where the WR room misses Jordy the most, leadership and keeping everyone level.

First, there was reason to expect more out of this team. We were a few botched plays from the Super Bowl last year. We started out this year 6-0, not pretty but we won 4 of those 6 by double digits. I don't remember anyone saying elite, but we were definitely considered contenders (there are NO elite teams anymore).
Went into the bye week hoping to iron out a few problems. Since then it's been duece city! Some had their suspicions, but no one saw this total, fatal collapse.
To not even compete is appalling! This team has developed the equivalent of cancer for a team...COMPLACENCY! They have taken on their Coaches persona.

Complacent and arrogant with a little stubbornness tossed on top. This isn't knee jerk or overreaction. It just might be time for MM and most of the staff to go.
There is an axiom in the NFL that: its better to get rid of someone a year too early than a year too late. Maybe that applies to coaches also.

Mostly agree, but admit it- if a Patriots or Broncos jersey got stretched like Adams was- there would be flags flying. The counterpoint to that is- If they aren't going to call it why don't our DBs start more clutch and grab? Answer: Because we aren't close enough to the WR to grab him!?!?!

For what's it's worth, Jordy is still in that room. Years ago, before Adams (and maybe Cobb) were on the team, a beat writer (I want to say Demovsky) called the WR group "the biggest group of front runners I've ever seen". Seems like that still may be the case.

Adams was pushing off and as physical as the DB was playing him. GB WR just don't handle physical DB and physical play well. Cobb and Adams are going to be limited with injuries all year and while Jones was a good fill in signing teams have figured out his moves and how we use him.

This whole group to a man is underwhelming .

Agree with Mark87.

I don't think any of our WR's are #1 guys. Adams is inconsistent and drops balls at crucial times. (I don't care of he has an ankle injury. His hands are fine) Cobb cannot get separation without a #1 WR next to him and Jones is just old.

I see Montgomery as the only possible difference maker in this WR group. Give Abby and Janis more playing time and see what happens. It cannot get any worse than it already is.

The refs were letting all kinds of crap go. You have to adjust as players. You are not going to bully them into changing the way they call the game and if anything showing up the refs the way Adams and AR did makes it less likely you'll get a call.

But to your first point, a jersey grab gets called 9 times out of 10, and they missed several on our guys and several BY our guys. An exceptionally poorly called game.

We are seeing a confluence of things this season, and the root of it goes back to last year. If you watched the offense against certain teams, you saw the problems especially with the WRs winning their match-ups. The thing is, most teams and coaches are stubborn and think they can do it "their way". It took time, but now more teams are willing to play the game a certain way when playing against the Packers. The blueprint is there and teams are less stubborn and all are employing a certain set of defensive tactics.

- You can't play a lot of zone against the Pack or AR will find guys. You have to play man.
- If you play man, you can't let AR out of the pocket. Therefore, control your pass rush and don't let him get outside. Contain him like you would R. Wilson. The bonus is that the line is susceptible to bull rushes. You don't need to try and fool them with upfield speed rushes. Just take them on man-to-man and the pocket will collapse with some regularity.
- Bring an extra man on the pass rush a fair amount of the time. You don't need to worry much about getting burned in the underneath middle, the Packers don't have a TE that can hurt you and he can easily be covered by a LB. They also don't use the RBs very much. (Again, the bonus is that the blitz will keep the RB from getting in the mix as a receiver.)
- You don't really need to keep 2 safeties deep, and this year you probably don't even "need" 1. They just aren't going to beat you deep very often. Take your chances and cover the mid-level areas to prevent crossing routes. The bonus again is that it helps stop what is already a somewhat anemic run game.

These things have been building for awhile, but when you had Jordy, you made them pay for playing man and not having 2 deep safeties. If they did double Jordy, Cobb had more room. If you dropped both your safeties deep then Lacy would give you trouble, or Cobb again had more room on the mid-level underneath type crossing routes. None of those things are options this year.

This won't be fixed until you deal with the personnel issues (though some scheme changes could make things better).
1) You need a stud WR - it's likely Jordy comes back and is that guy. If in doubt, draft one high.
2) You need a stud RB - can you get Lacy to stop eating and get him to spend the last week of June and the first 3 weeks of July getting in prime shape and getting down to 240#. If not, you need to draft a RB. (fortunately, good ones are often available in non-premium rounds)
3) You need a TE with some ability to run away from LBs thus forcing a safety into coverage - Rodgers is not that guy. Not sure if Perillo or Backman can be, but I'm thinking you need to draft one.
4) Lastly, your OL is not good. You need to draft one high and add depth in a later round so that you don't have to play one-legged guys because the back-ups are sorely lacking.
