Packers Among Teams Interested in Signing Watt

  • Two years, $31MM maximum value
  • $28MM in base salary + $3MM in incentives based on sack totals
    • 10 sacks in 2021 = $1MM in 2021 + $1MM escalator for 2022
    • 10 sacks in 2022 = $1MM incentive
  • $12MM signing bonus
  • $14.5MM Year 1 base value
  • $13.5 million in 2022

One more note: $20 million is fully guaranteed at signing, with the remaining $3 million (guaranteed for injury) vesting in March 2022. That means Watt's baseline is either $20 million for one year or $28 million over two.
So as usual structure matters. Yeah $31m guaranteed was a “bit off”

No it was 31 contract with 23 guranteed which was the original report I heard and getting 20 out of 23 fully guaranteed is pretty good.

Yeah it was but with structure its basically a 1 year @ $20m then let’s see. Structure matters

Though is it really not a 2 year though?

He gets $14.5 million this year with $12 million being a SB. That would make $2.5 million base salary with $5.5 of 2022 guaranteed for the $20 million guaranteed fully.

So 2021 Cap is $8.5 million
2022 Cap is $19.5 million with a dead cap of $11.5 million.

While you save $8 million to cut him $11.5 million dead cap is still a big hit to take.

Like taking a cap hit on dead money has stopped teams this year and a $3.5M difference is minimal....wonder what the cash out savings will be also.....cash out is significant part of cap / contract thats not looked at close enough

If he gets cut after this year would cash out savings be $8 million since it seems he likely has $5.5 million fully guaranteed for 2022 and has $13.5 million due in 2022.

J.J. Watt’s contract includes 3 void years on the back end, allowing the $12M signing bonus to spread out the max 5 years, meaning his 2021 cap figure with the Cardinals will be $4.9M.
