Official Preseason Game 2 Green Bay vs New Orleans Thread

Some Thoughts~

Special Teams
It's NOT that hard to stay in your lane. You have a couple of free runners...generally, but you can go and see 3-4 guys who are well out of their lanes as the KRer gets out past the 10. Lazy sloppy mistakes
They couldn’t even get their act together presnap! On successive punt plays - one receiving, the next punting away - they had 12 men in the huddle then 10 men on the field. Unacceptable

Amari is an undersized, unathletic, uncoordinated return specialist with decision-making problems and poor route running. If we keep 6, lose Amari to like the Falcons or something and put DD, Toure and Fulgham on the PS, we're better off.

Amari Rodgers is disappointing. He was a 3rd round pick who barely played last year because he did not understand the routes. Seems he's not much better still struggling to run his routes. He's flashed a couple times as a returner but that's about it you expect more from a 3rd round pick. The other WR's are showing what they are inexperinced rookies that will be forced to learn in live game action were their mistakes could cost the team wins. They have talent and look like they could do something some day but right now it seems hit or miss from them.

Tyler Davis was nothing but media hype. Someone decided they liked this kid early in the off-season and hyped him up. In truth this kid is in the 3rd year in the NFL and continues to do nothing. The Packers have Tonyan, Deguara, and Lewis at TE. It's very possible there will not even be a 4th TE kept with how bad the rest have played in camp. If they do keep a 4th TE it might not even be on the roster right now.

Special Teams continue to be mentally special. Lot's of stupid mental errors being made that should not happen. That is on our big name big money special teams coach. He was hired to fix those. I know the talent on special teams is not that great but that's the reason he was hired to find a way to get the best out of what this team has. The team also went out and signed a couple guys who had worked with him in the past you would figure this team would be better. There has been no news on Crosby besides they hope he's ready for TC after getting his knee scoped. You would hope they would have given out a update.

Jordan Love played ok. 1st half he looked crisp with good throws for the most part. Had a bad one or two but that happens with any QB. Third quarter was a different story. His throws were more off the mark and had less zip to them. Yes that could be partialy because of the rain but any QB needs to be able to play in that conditon. Overall I think Love is showing he can be a decent backup right now to Rodgers. The jury is still out if he can be a decent starter.

Depth on this team showed how poor it is during game. The backups often looked lost or overmatched last night. On defense we saw the LB's and DB's often being out of position not knowing were they should be in a play. The OL were getting pushed around like rag dolls. When injuries happen as they will as it happes to all teams this is going to be a concern when some of these guys have to step up into a expanded role.

I think next week vs KC the starters need to get in the game. Put them in for a quarter. But this team can't have a repeat of last years opener were they were not ready to play. Just give them a bit to knock off some rust and give the live action.

He did an interview last week, said he was 2 weeks away from getting the green light to kick. Should be ready week 1.

Love looked fine. Slight lull in the 3rd, but he was playing with scrubs. I counted about a dozen drops.

Etling- I like him. Too old to develop as a franchise guy, but he could be a backup to Love next year when we trade Aaron to Seattle for their next three entire drafts.

Tyler Davis- I see the potential, but he's not ready for prime time. How bad was Dafney hurt? Can we get him back?

ST- I'm not giving up, but I'm rolling my eyes.

I don't think the OL looked quite that bad overall but in preseason I think you need to look at it drive by drive because guys were being pulled and different combos being used. The Packers' third drive, for example, they got backed up because of a dumb Tyler Davis penalty which wiped out one of Love's better throws to Doubs. Deep in their own end with long down and distance is tough because the D knows you're passing and they pin their ears back. GB had also pulled Myers and Runyan, I think Van Lanen was in at LG and Hansen moved to center, and I thought Hansen especially struggled early in pass pro in the middle there. They got bailed out by penalty and once they got to restart that drive I don't think they were bad. Tom was at RT and a couple times had nice, solid back side blocks that allowed Goodson to get a couple big gains. Newman had a nice back side block as well. So I don't think it was all bad.

Frankly I think one of the worst players on the field last night was Sean Rhyan, really disappointing for a 3rd round pick. People talk about cutting Amari Rodgers, but if Rhyan wasn't a high pick he'd be on the PS.

One more note with Love, I think it was the second drive for them when they got down to the red zone. On 3rd and goal he had to scramble around and I swear, that throw he made into the front corner of the end zone was really really good. Like, a good WR drags the toes and makes that catch a TD. Jordy makes that a TD, Cobb does, James Jones probably does. It was a lot to expect for Patrick Taylor. Could've been a highlight play for him, it was VERY Rodgers-esque.

Sean Ryan will be good, still confident in him. Needs a year I guess.

I like Tom at LT, as a #4 option. Unfortunately we are currently already down to our #3 option.

Remember when McCarthy had to slide Darren College over LT to start against Minnesota in the dome? We don't have to embarrass ourselves like that.

If we had to start Van Lanen at LT and leave Mercedes in max protect all game, it would be better than what happened that day.

There was good and bad as usual last night. Love, Doubs, Goodson, McDuffie, C.Slayton and a few others had some mostly positive moments. After that it was lots of meh.

I really don't see it as a horrible lack of depth, at least not a whole lot more than most teams. Hell, our crappy depth just beat the Saints crappy depth. I think it's certain positions that are just plain bad, some are better than usual.

On offense I think they have good depth at RB especially when Hill is back. They have depth at WR, but at that position it seems they don't have any high end guys - lots of #3-5 guys. At TE, they lack depth. In fact, they have nothing except one guy who can block and nobody who can challenge a defense in the passing game. I'd be fine with keeping just three. Oh, and Tyler Davis is not a "media" creation, it's foolish voices from inside 1265 that were talking him up before camp - the media just jumped on board what BG and ML were saying. Davis is a PS guy at best at this point. On o-line they have a lot of "competent" guys to play inside but lack quality depth at OT. They're okay when Jenkins and hopefully Bahkt get back but Nijman is just a guy. After that all you have is bodies at OT. They're also decent at QB right now assuming Love continues to make progress.

On defense it's the have's and have not's. They have outstanding depth at DL for once. They have the best group of ILB's they've had in a long, long time. Barnes and McDuffie look pretty solid as the #3/4 guys. They don't have squat for depth at CB and S. Injuries there will bring the defense down. Enagbare could be okay at at OLB, but it doesn't look very good beyond Gary and PSmith.

And I have no idea what's going on with special teams. You'd think with 3 coaches they'd at least be able to get the right number of guys on the field each time. The only thing I keep in mind is that I'm hoping some of the problems are due to guys who won't be here in a week. Maybe once they are dealing with just guys from the "53" things will get tightened up. That's all I got that keeps me hopeful during this mess.
