Jeff Janis' departure leaves void on Packers' special teams

Nobody on the Packers' roster matched Janis’ combination of size (6-3, 219 pounds) and speed (4.42 40). It helped him become their top coverage player on special teams. Janis flourished as a gunner on punts, helping rookie Justin Vogel set a franchise record with a 41.6-yard net average last season.

Janis was a gunner on each of Vogel’s 71 punts, facing a double-team block on more than 40 percent of those snaps. He was first to arrive downfield in coverage 24 times and second 19 times. He only had four tackles, but a review of his punt-coverage snaps showed Janis forced nine fair catches and assisted on seven others.

Agreed on that last part. He was never a good fit combined with questionable coaching and a very picky QB

JMHO...........but I think the QB is picky (and also a bit prickly at times) about WR's running routes in this offense is partly because those routes are mostly timing routes that require the WR to be at a certain spot at a certain time or the whole shebang blows up, and it's something not all WR prospects are capable of doing. Hence, the allegory that Janis was a bad fit for the GB offense.
 
I'd go a step farther....not only not coached up, but not used properly. We talk about lack of speed with WRs and Nelson losing a step and here in him we had a deep threat that wasn't used.

And also when AR held on to the ball for long periods of time he waited for WRs to get open which meant breaking off routes to get open as offense got predictable by opposing defenses, so where's the defense for not using him?

2 seasons back he made amazing catches on Hail Mary passes and was good enough for those and yet wasn't used as a deep threat otherwise?

Watch him maybe excel in his new home and everyone will be why did we let him go? ;)

But that was what DannoB referenced. He wasn't a good fit for the iso-routes this system uses. He may very well be more productive in his new home, but that doesn't change the fact that he didn't 'fit' here. He was a 7th round pick, poor route runner and was seldom productive outside of two Hail Mary's. C'mon, the angst people have is crazy. He will be replaced on STs by a position player (probably defensive side) who will be much cheaper like Mark suggested. WR is really not a position you want your special teams ace to be playing.
 
Not enough of details guy to know, so just wondering why it's better to have D guys on ST than WR.

why is that? he was big, strong, and fast. as many have said, he was never going to be a #1 or #2 receiver, so it's not like you're jeopardizing the offense by playing him on special teams. besides, unlike the packers, many teams play their starters on special teams.

there's this general feeling floating around in some circles that jeff just isn't smart enough to learn the packers offense. the guy scored a 30 on the wonderlic.

Normally, WR's aren't as strong as defensive players, but Janis was the exception to that rule. He was a weight room junkie.

Janis is a smart guy, but does he have "football" smarts/instincts??
