2025 Badger Football Thread

Kansas passing offense ranked 88th in the nation last year. While the rushing was ranked 13th. So yeah seems it's going to go back to old run run run the ball and just get servicable QB's and WR's so I don't expect that QB they just got to stay long if all he's going to be doing is handing the ball off.

A rundown on an article about the running game system GB/SF use at the college level.... >> look who teaches and runs it in college!

The closest thing at FBS at least is BYU and Baylor. They run what I like to call a super college version of the Wide Zone offense. Baylor OC (and former BYU Head Coach) Jeff Grimes calls it the Reliably Violent Offense.

Basically, they run the Wide Zone out of pistol and then play action boot off of it. They use a ton of motion. And when they have to drop back, they try to simplify their QB’s reads as much as possible. It has Shanahan written all over it, but with a college style.

As for other schools, I’ve watched Kentucky run Wide Zone from under center more than other schools, so it might be closer to a more traditional Shanny scheme. That being said I’m not that knowledgable on their style so I can’t say for certain. Ohio State also loves it out of the pistol, and they’ve torched run defenses with it so far this season. While both of these schools incorporate it, I know for a fact that it’s not OSU’s primary focus. Kentucky I’m not so sure.

In honor of the Simpsons Frank Grimes going to call him Grimey.

I agree the Kansas passing numbers could turn some guys off, but maybe this was just him using the players he had to best advantage. At his other stops he had better passing games. I think if you give him the tools he can be more passing oriented. He did some good things as Baylor's OC and here is a quote from his Baylor Bio about his time at BYU.

Prior to coming to Baylor, Grimes directed a high-powered offense at BYU in 2020 that finished its season ranked in the top-15 of 10 different statistical categories, including scoring (3rd, 43.5 ppg), total offense (7th, 522.2 ypg) and passing offense (8th, 332.1 ppg).

With Grimes at the helm, the 2020 BYU Cougars tied for the national lead in yards per play at 7.84, and led all of FBS in plays of 30 or more yards with 45. Overall, BYU scored 40 or more points nine times in 12 games.

Under Grimes’ leadership, BYU quarterback Zach Wilson was named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and Manning Award, as well as a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien Award. In 2020, Wilson passed for 3,692 yards, 33 touchdowns and posted a 196.4 passing efficiency. He finished the year ranked in the top-10 nationally in 11 offensive categories.

Led by All-American offensive lineman Brady Christensen, the BYU offensive line allowed only 12 sacks in 12 games, the eighth-best per game average in the country, and helped the Cougars to the fourth-most rushing touchdowns nationally with 34. Running back Tyler Allgeier rushed for 1,130 yards, the ninth-best total in BYU history and the eighth-best total by a FBS player for the season.

Overall, BYU had four offensive players named to All-America teams in 2020, including Wilson, Christensen, and wide receiver Dax Milne. Additionally, freshman tight end Isaac Rex earned Freshman All-America honors from The Athletic. Wilson (1st round, No. 3 overall, New York Jets), Christensen (3rd round, Carolina) and Milne (7th round, Washington) were each selected in the 2021 NFL Draft.

I think if he has a QB, he can find a way to use him, but if all he has in that room is a Braydn Locke then he will find a way to run the ball and have an effective offense. I don't know how it'll turn out but even with that big-time running game at Kansas last year, his mediocre passing game was still ranked higher than the Badgers "Air Raid". I'm willing to give him a chance.

Braedyn Locke officially enters the transfer portal. That leaves UW with 3 scholarship QBs - two incoming freshman and a red-shirt freshman for next year. They'll need to hit the portal for at least 1 and likely 2 QBs for next season.
