Packers decline Datone Jones' 5th year option

between letting Neal go, Peppers' age and CMIII and Perrys injury histories there is no reason not to think Jones will have plenty of opportunities on the field this year. Up to him to make it happen.

There's also Fackrell and Elliott fighting for snaps. It is indeed up to Datone to beat them. Sheeeesh - that's a lot of pass rushers!

Someone over at FF made an interesting point: Datone's natural weight may be in the 270s - range of our elephant position. We've been asking him to be bigger for 5-tech purposes, which may have not done him any favors.

It's a lot of bodies but little consistency and impact.

Thats a good point about his weight but fits the broader picture about GBs recent drafts - too many high picks on guys forced to play out of position. Perry, Neal and Jones are natural 4-3 ends. Team tried to force extra weight on two of them with little to show for it. This year seems like the first time in 5 years TT has drafted front 7 players for their natural positions.

There were 11 other first rounders from that draft whose teams declined their 5th year options too.

People say you need three years to properly grade a draft.. Well that first round sucked. 12 guys from that season did not make enough of an impact for a 5th year option..... ouch
