49ers fire D-coordinator Steve Wilks after one season

Shanahan said something about Wilks never fit in with what Shanahan wanted to do. But Niners had one of best defenses in the league. He also said all coaches would be back. Wonder if he got pressure from above.

Honestly, he didn't fit in in terms of scheme, everyone for gets his staff has been raided for 3-4 years in a row. He lost 2 DC as HC to the Jets and Texans along with 3-4 other top assists. People tend to dismiss the impact that has yet he overcame it and took them to a SB.
Also all the nonsense about him not being a good coach...Reid had that rep in Philly... they dumped him( Reid can't win the big game) and he went to KC and won 3 SB! Never judge a book by its cover.

Tough break the guy called a defense that held KC to under 20 in regulation. SF list because the offense disappeared for long stretches. The defense didn’t get stops at the end of the game and in OT. But man SF is either incredibly arrogant or better have someone better in the wings who does just as good or Shanny looks like a fool next year.

On the one hand of course he’s right. On the other, this seems a strange way to kick off your tenure with the team - throw a dude under the bus.

It's like listening to the chatter about how Marv Levy, with Buffalo, and Bud Grant, with the Vikings, were losers because they took their teams to 4 Super Bowls and lost. Or that Dan Marino wasn't a great QB because he didn't win any Super Bowls.

It's pure garbage saying those things. It's like you pointed out, with Reid, in Philadelphia, and now with KC. They labeled him and it was poppycock. Same with Shanahan. The guy is a damned good coach, and isn't afraid to bring in top quality guys as assistants, and cultivating their talent, despite knowing they'll leave for great jobs.

A good HC is hard to find, and Shanahan has to be one of the best in the business. Him and Reid, at this point, are probably the poster boys for the NFC and AFC, respectfully.
