GB wakes up late but can't overcome yet another awful defensive performance.

Somehow, after three quarters of unsightly football, of defensive incompetency and, for the most part, offensive stagnation, the Green Bay Packers cobbled together an opportunity to tie the game.

A gutty interception by rookie cornerback Damarious Randall, victimized on an earlier possession for a touchdown pass, handed the Packers the ball at the 22-yard line of the Carolina Panthers. Trailing by 20 points at halftime, the Packers needed just a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to tie the game, to rewrite a game that oozed abysmal for the 45 preceding minutes.

An encroachment penalty inched them 5 yards closer. A fourth-down completion to Randall Cobb yielded a crucial new set of downs. A scramble by Rodgers brought the ball to the 4-yard line.
Fourth-and-goal.

Rodgers took the snap and danced in the pocket, pressure coming up the middle from Kawann Short. He backpedaled. He threw desperately toward the end zone. He lofted a feeble pass that was intercepted by linebacker Thomas Davis.
A raucous, improbable and altogether stunning comeback was erased. The Packers, down by 20 and pulling within a whisper of tying the game, lost for a second consecutive week, 37-29.

Player of the Game: Newton. Erratic at times with his accuracy, sure, but Newton was simply terrific on Sunday. Like Peyton Manning last week and Philip Rivers two weeks before that, Newton found ways to expose and exploit a Packers’ defense that is in serious freefall after three straight horrendous performances. Newton was efficient with his arm (15-of-30 for 297 yards and three touchdowns) and churned out first downs with his legs (57 yards and one touchdown) in a game that was comfortable for the Panthers until the final eight minutes.

Turning point: Trailing 27-7 at halftime after an anemic start to the game, the Packers’ pulse flickered early in the third quarter. They took the opening possession of the half 80 yards on just three plays for an enormous momentum-swinging score, capped by a beautiful 53-yard touchdown reception by Randall Cobb. But the defense immediately wilted on the very next drive, and the Panthers marched 82 yards on 13 plays that melted more than six minutes off the clock. It was not until the midway point of the fourth quarter, when Rodgers connected with tailback James Starks for a 29-yard touchdown, that the Packers infused energy into the game. They compiled two breathtaking, no-huddle drives that produced 15 points in fewer than five minutes before falling short at the goal line.

Big number: 427 — Total yards for the Panthers, whose balanced attack slashed the Packers with runs by tailback Jonathan Stewart (66 yards) or Newton and carved up a secondary that was undermanned and, at times, non-communicative. After allowing 500-plus yards in back-to-back games, the Packers improved only marginally.
What went right: Little or nothing until the final minutes, especially on defense. The glimmers of hope came from the offense, which put together an 11-play, 65-yard drive in the first quarter to take the lead. It was an inventive possession by the Packers, with Jeff Janis, Jared Abbrederis, Aaron Ripkowski and Justin Perillo all taking the field in a substitution-happy march down the field. The drive ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Richard Rodgers. Later, to start the third quarter, Rodgers orchestrated a lightning-quick scoring drive to temporarily bring life back into the game. He found Randall Cobb for a 53-yard touchdown pass along the left sideline, pulling the Packers within 27-14. Two no-huddle drives late in the fourth quarter showed plenty of gusto, but the initial deficit proved a bit too large to overcome. Rodgers finished with 369 yards and four touchdowns.

What went wrong: For the most part, everything went wrong for the Packers on defense. Minus two key contributors in the secondary — cornerbacks Sam Shields (shoulder) and Quinten Rollins (neck) were sidelined — the defense struggled to contain a group of Panthers’ receivers that is mediocre at best and unenviable at worst. There was a blown coverage that allowed Jerricho Cotchery to run wide open up the middle for a 59-yard grab. There was another mistake by Demetri Goodson that opened a window for Corey Brown to haul in a 39-yard touchdown. And rookie Devin Funchess beat Damarious Randall for 52 more. By halftime, Newton racked up 209 yards and two touchdowns — and a 20-point lead on the scoreboard that barely held up.

Shocked at the interior O play, it wasn't guys getting beat it seemed to be confusion on who was assigned to who. Would've thought it was GB coming off the short week. Defensive backfield blew assignments in coverage again which has been on going for 3-4 years.

Maybe it's good they lost. If they won they could cover up 7 quarters of playing like garbage and say...hey we beat undefeated Carolina we aren't so bad after all.

Hopefully they can be more critical and wake the hell up they have some flaws in their offense and defense.

I saw perillo get a few snaps. They started using starks way too late.

Why is it starks makes a couple plays and then ignore him for 2 hours before remembering he actually plays.

At least we have 1 good db. Randall clutch **** play at the end of the game. He's had the only 2 TOs on the entire D the last 2 weeks. Where **** has the rest of the D been last 3 games?

Worst good-looking statistical game from Rodgers I've ever seen, for sure.

I mean, a lot has to happen for us to be in the SB. RR and Adams have to consistently produce. Lacy has to at least improve somewhat. We clearly need better ILB play (end this and go get a vet next offseason).

But, Shields returns and stays healthy don't see why some or most of that can't happen. Just tired of the same BS--too much zone against non-threatening offensive teams, no urgency for long stretches of the season, playcalling, etc. We don't have to make the SB every year but the last five years have clearly been under-achievement.

On the flip side we get the Lions next detsux)

That's one way of looking at it. Another way of looking at it is that the Lions get to play us next week.

  • This game looked like an extension of last week. Hangover?
  • I wonder when Dom Capers will notice that his three-man rush never works? 3rd and 16 and your defense gives up 59 yards to Jerricho Cotchery? Good thing you dropped everyone back to defend the pass.
  • Cam Newton stared down Greg Olson on the Panthers second touchdown. Not sure what Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was looking at but he missed the clue. Clinton-Dix was horrible today and everyone noticed. Even Julius Peppers. More on that later.
  • If Aaron Rodgers doesn’t play extremely well at all times, this team has no chance. Rodgers took that last push into his own hands and I’m honestly not sure why it didn’t happen sooner. When Rodgers started playing like the world was about to end, things turned around.
  • Why should the Packers stop using Eddie Lacy? Because he is having issues holding the ball lately. I’ve been very pro Lacy up until now. I’m actually starting to believe that his lack offseason workouts are a problem. It seems to me that Lacy just doesn’t take this seriously.
  • James Starks deserves a ton of credit for outstanding play. Starks always leaves it all out on the field and today was no different. I expect the Packers to start him next week.

    More like James STARTS. AMIRITE?!?!

  • Nick Perry played out of his mind. Perry is having his best season as a Packer. Earlier in the year I said I wouldn’t re-sign him because of health. Now I think the Packers should try to keep him around, as long as the deal is cheap.
  • The Packers came out as a different team in the second half. Then they stopped. Then they started again. Make up your minds.
  • Jake Ryan has replaced Nate Palmer. It’s about time. I thought it would happen sooner. Palmer lacks athleticism and I would rather see Ryan work out the kinks than continue on with just another guy.
  • Richard Rodgers looks horribly slow. How can you expect that guy to get open when he runs like he has cement blocks on his feet? The Packers tight end play is so bad that Packers fans are waiting for Andrew Quarless to come back. It’s that bad.
  • After giving up almost 1,500 yards in the last two weeks the defense is at each other’s throats. And for good reason. Julius Peppers and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix little spat seemed to be the spark that started their fire but why does it take a fight to fix things?

At least the #Packers are hitting someone? https://t.co/iddjd2P0QH

  • The Packers and the Vikings are now tied for first in the NFC North and it’s a serious uphill climb for the Packers if they want to be the first seed.

#Packers made it interesting, but getting No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs would now require GB to go 8-0, Carolina 5-3. Or GB 7-1, CAR 4-4

  • Time for the “come to Jesus” meeting. The Packers have to do something to fix this dumpster fire. Fast.

Starks - The anti-Lacy right now

Cobb/Adams - They both had good catches.

thumbsdown))

The team in general - Just bad.

MM/Clements - The offense looked completely emotionless out there again.

Capers - Running QBs - Dom's kryptonite. Also rushing 3 on third and forever.

The OL - Specifically the guards/center. What the hell, guys?

HHCD - While the rest of the secondary was mixed, it was HHCD who has blown it the most today.

Aaron Rodgers - Not his finest day yet again.

R. Rodgers - Looking slow and tentative.

TT - Personnel issues aside (TE & DL specifically), someone needs to put pressure on MM regarding his staff/choice of coordinators.

Mark says that Janis and Abbey were out there in formations. yet no targets. Which was also mentioned they weren't open..

Okay if all 5 of your WR can't get open? Then MM/OC suck something fierce...

edit: I'll revisit this is the morning.. when i'm less ticked off at the lack of passion for 3 Q

It's hard to argue with any of this.

Even with a good day "on paper", Rodgers missed multiple open receivers, especially Cobb for some big gains.

Everyone needs to be held responsible, and that includes all coaches and Thompson.

Couple FYI

Lacy was playing with a pulled groin... not a great injury for a RB.

Rodgers getting heat for saying something scared him on the last goal lie play. Maybe it was the bloody illegal pick we ran. Carolina said in some of their post game they plan to send the Packers picks into the NFL because they were not called.

For those that have not been following NFL is supposedly cracking down on picks with contact on crossing routes and in the redzone. I have yet to see it flagged in a game. sh))
