Thompson: "We value draft and development, we value free agency"

He was asked a question. He answered it
He was specifically asked if he wanted to play in Green Bay instead??? And then he said he wanted to play for his new team's hatred rival instead??? Something is fishy here. o_O

i know why. there are a couple of very good reasons.

  • his own head coach called him out publicly for not making an effort to fill the obvious holes.
  • he himself said that he "values free agency", leading the ever-hopeful to believe maybe he would actually do something this year
  • the packers have come so close to making a return trip to the super bowl in the past few seasons and it just seems like they need a player or two to get over the hump.
  • it is obvious to everyone that there are a couple of big holes to fill and there does not appear to be anyone in the draft to fill those holes.
i thought this year would be different too. the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Reality. I guess Murphy and Co. don't care how Ted puts the team together or fills holes when they're so close. Business as usual, I guess. FP(

Let's review this whole Q/A thing

" But Trevathan said Thursday in an appearance on NFL Network that the Packers never called."I wish they would have, but they didn't," he said.
"My guy Randall Cobb is over there, but they didn't so I'm here with Chicago."
Trevathan played with Cobb in college at the University of Kentucky.

[bcolor=#ffff00]It's worth noting that Trevathan was asked about Green Bay by Packers receiver James Jones, a free agent who was serving as a guest studio host.[/bcolor]

The 2nd part is what smells to me... I think that Q/A was cooked up prior to the interview. Just me

He was asked if they called. That's it. Read the quote

Isn't our issue at ILB covering TEs and RBs?
Both depending on who was in the rotation. Joe Thomas could cover but got run over, the other ILB were decent vs the run but looked silly covering the pass. We just don't have anyone that can do both consistently in my opinion.

All he had to say was we never called. He didn't have to say he wished we had - publicly like that. Even if he only wanted us to help drive up his contract it would have been smarter to say nothing here.

Maybe he's just not all that smart? Maybe giving him all that money was not a great idea? Maybe he is not as good as it seems and he was surrounded by better pass rushers and better DBs and he cashed in on his Super Bowl ring? Maybe we dodged a bullet and didn't give guaranteed millions to a guy who is very average?
I like Ryan and believe he's going to make that jump in his second year. He had a major knee injury his junior(?) year at Michigan and might just be hitting his stride now. I would still like to see a ILB with coverage skills next to him though.

Dubz, you like Jake Ryan better than Travathan? Not trying to be a wise guy here. Seriously wondering if you think Ryan will be that good? I hope so. I still think ILB is one of the biggest needs this team has and this draft doesn't look to be that great for that particular need.

well, let's at least give him the chance to develop into that guy. for comparison sake, in his rookie season, trevathan played in 16 games, had 33 total tackles 3 passes defended and one sack. ryan only played in 14 games, but he had 50 total tackles. no sacks or passes defended though.

now trevathan took a huge jump in his second season. i mean night and day huge. not sure ryan can make that sort of leap, but let's hope he can.
