The Sunset Years Of Aaron Rodgers

I was only thinking of Cal qbs. Not where he was an assistant. I give Carr a pass his ol was pathetic. Dilfer had a decent nfl career. I can say the same of Joe Tiller or even Jimmy Johnson when they were college coaches. You still need coaching at the pro level. Your not ready on day 1

lol. dilfer had one good season and basically his job in getting the ravens to the superbowl was to not get in the way of the ravens defense.

anyway, the point was that until rodgers came along, tedford's qbs looked awesome in college and not-so-good in the nfl. akili smith was one of the all-time busts.

on a side note, it's kind of funny reading that article now with 20-20 hindsight. len pasquarelli must cringe knowing that article is still available on the espn website.

"Funny thing, but Alex Smith of Utah, the other highly regarded quarterback prospect in this draft, is often accused of playing in a "gimmick" offense. But Smith has better stats than Rodgers in terms of completion percentage (66.3-63.8), yards per attempt (8.86-8.22), yards per completion (13.38-12.90) and touchdown pass percentage (8.0-6.5). Plus he is the better of the two at making plays with his feet.

Tedford has insisted Rodgers possesses more natural athleticism than his other students who were chosen in the first round. But when you watch Rodgers on tape, he displays all the signature Tedford mechanics, including the manner in which he holds the ball high, up around the ear-hole of his helmet.

The technique is known, in Tedford-talk, as putting the ball "on the shelf." It has yet, though, to put any of his pupils on the top shelf among NFL quarterbacks. And the guess is that Rodgers will struggle as much as his predecessors from the Tedford school have in making the transition to the NFL."

nailed it!

Considering Craig Nall was the only QB drafted under Sherman I'm not sure you can judge how he developed QBS. As to Tedford QBS rhe only one that comes to mind is Boller. And no. McCarthy was not hired to develop Rodgers.
Mike was absolutely hired to develop Aaron.

Did Ted tell you that? It's not like McCarthy did wonders with Alex Smith. Who did he develop prior to Rodgers ?

Mike made his reputation developing Rich Gannon (a career backup) into a pro bowler. He also worked with other QBs, like Aaron Brooks.

McCarthy had 3 seasons with Gannon at kc. He did squat until he played under Gruden. Brooks? And he developed into a very average at best qb.

Back on subject. I think you have to consider what's coming out if NCAA ball. If there is a guy take him. The pool is that thin the next 2 years.

QB is THE position where I'm very willing to just throw (away) draft picks and see if you can develop 'em. If only for backups. Even mediocre backup vets are crazy expensive on the open market.

If next two draft classes are poor, it's not a catastrophe. Arod is 32, not 35. We just throw 3rd and later round fliers, see if any stick. I'm not sold on Hundley yet, but can't ignore his promise. If MM thinks he's a worthy backup, I trust him.

When Arod hits 35 (or starts having more chronic injury issues), it's higher pick and actual replacement plan time.

Need a little more background, please.
Aaron wasn't exactly lighting it up his first couple years. When Mike came in, he gave Aaron specific things to do during the offseason. This included a certain body fat %, etc. Mike reworked his mechanics (Tedford had him holding the ball up by his ear hole) and also foot work. Mike has his own system of footwork that goes in line with his offense and read progressions.

When Aaron came in after Favre went down in that Cowboys game in '07, he looked like a whole new QB. Complete remake.

Never heard all of that before, other than AR not being a world-beater early on. Nice that Mike was able to help, but I'd never heard that was his reason for being brought in.
