The NFL Scouting Combine is set to kick off in Indianapolis this week with players arriving as early as Tuesday. Six Badger players are hoping to perform well in hopes of boosting their draft value, and may be even looking for some sort of redemption at Lucas Oil Stadium, the site of the devastating Big Ten Championship loss to Penn State.
The six Badgers participating in the combine are: outside linebacker Vince Biegel, running back Corey Clement, running back Dare Ogunbowale, offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk, cornerback Sojourn Shelton, and linebacker T.J. Watt.
The first Badgers to participate in the combine will be Ryan Ramczyk, Corey Clement, and Dare Ogunbowale, beginning on Tuesday, February 28th and concluding on Friday, March 3rd. Vince Biegel and T.J. Watt will participate in the combine from Thursday, March 2nd through Sunday, March 5th. And finally, Sojourn Shelton will begin his combine on Friday, March 3rd and finish on Monday, March 6th.
Throughout the four-day long event, the athletes will complete a number of physical, mental, and health related tests. On the last day is when the athletes get to take to the turf for the On-Field Workout. When the NFL Prospects participate in their on-field workouts they will compete in the 40-yard dash, broad jump, vertical jump, three cone drill, shuttle run, and position specific drills. Current Badgers Draft Outlook
Ryan Ramczyk certainly enjoyed his first year of eligibility with the Badgers. After sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules, Ramczyk proved he was worth the wait and is being projected as a first round draft pick in many mock drafts. It will be interesting to see where Ramczyk ends up being drafted after undergoing hip surgery after the Cotton Bowl and depending on how well he performs in the combine.
T.J. Watt continued the Watt family’s tradition of excellence as a Badger this season. T.J. had the third most tackles on the team with 63. 15.5 tackles were for loss, which was a team high. Watt also recorded 11.5 sacks, one interception (which was returned for a touchdown), and one forced fumble. With all of these stats, experts have T.J. being picked between the late first round and mid-third round.
Corey Clement had an incredible 2016 campaign, bouncing back from an injury-plagued 2015 season. Clement rushed for 1,375 yards and 15 touchdowns. CBS Sports has Corey ranked as the 12th running back and projects him to be taken somewhere in the fourth and fifth round.
Vince Biegel, even though he missed two games, racked up 44 tackles (six for losses) and four sacks. Despite the overall good stats, Biegel’s leadership on the Wisconsin Badgers defense is what sets him apart and will be missed most next year. CBS Sports has Biegel ranked as the 11th overall outside linebacker and sees him being drafted somewhere in the fourth and fifth round.
Dare Ogunbowale proved his versatility this season; as a third down back he was able to run, catch, and pass block. Ogunbowale had a total of 714 yards (508 rushing and 206 receiving) and five rushing touchdowns, in addition to one receiving touchdown. Ogunbowale is ranked as the 34th running back in the draft and is expected to be a late round pick or signed as a free agent.
Sojourn Shelton is currently ranked as the 32nd overall cornerback and projected to be drafted in the seventh round or signed as a free agent by CBS Sports. Shelton was second on the team in interceptions this season, snagging four of them, and often was in charge of covering his opponent’s top receiver.
