Ted overrated as a GM and draft guru?

Umm no not going to let Thompson off this easily. Pretty good arguments made for Thompson and that is because of the way this thread was started.

Of course drafting is no exact science and the later a team drafts in every round the odds go against. However if this really held true then why are the teams that pick near the top of the draft every year not Super Bowl winners yet?

Thanks to so many drafts a lot of research has been done. Always used to refer to Draft Theories for years. If teams stick to them, especially in early rounds, overall team will improve and be better. Early years Thompson followed this and really did take best player available. He hasn't stuck to BAP for years now.

Another facet of research has also been done and is at Ourlads. Ourlads in one of the original draft sites and services left and some NFL teams still use them for research. If go to there site will see menu options. They have the research to back this up and of course there are always exceptions, but they have what rounds give best odds for acquiring what positions.

OK there's the research now back to Thompson. Where he started going astray is when he gave press and fans lip service of always best available player. Clearly has not been the case in early rounds over last many years. Instead he has many times reached and taken lessor rated player for need to fill a hole. That kind of drafting will weaken a team over time and catch up.

Part 2 of this is look at how many high picks have been wasted on front 7 of Defense and the O-Line while ignoring other positions such as WR, TE, ILB, Corner. Yes he did recently draft Randall and Rollins in first 2 rounds but that just backs up even more his reaching and drafting for need verses taking best available players.

Outside of Matthews, name one OLB/ Pass Rusher Thompson has drafted early that has been an impact player and not just a guy?

Outside of Raji name a high round DL that has been impact out of all of those picks spent on these 2 positions?

Outside of Greg Jennings name one other true number Go-To WR he's drafted in rounds 2-3? You might make an argument for Nelson though imo he's not...but for argument's sake even if I give you Nelson that was way back in Thompson's early drafts.

Nick Collins also came from his early drafts.

Now we know no GM is prefect but when your entire team's future depends solely on the draft, you better be the best at it and better than everyone else. Can't always expect undrafted free agents, street free agents and late round picks to be hits. More times then not those are misses ànd àt best role players or white chips.

Look who all we lost from core and who plays in there place. Richard Rodgers for Finley for example. He wouldn't have even beat out Thomason a 3rd stringer on Favre's SB team.

Will ask this, how good and how much help would Bryant have been on this team playing with AR? Yes that is just one example of a player Thompson passed over for a player not even on the team anymore. Or TE Henry ? The list roles on.

This is what happens when you don't stick to BAP and keep drafting for need, reaching and hoping that player pans out.

And sorry but free agency and drafting do tie in together. It's all parts of a GM's toolbox. And no it's not an organization's policy not to use it. That is all Thompson.

A GM and HC can't live off past success. This team seriously lacks impact and blue chip players and the ones who are left are now older and not the players they once were, while overall depth in not anywhere close to what it was in Rodgers Super Bowl year.

As for McCarthy and his staff have covered that in other threads here. The 2 of them are tied together....the talent isn't as good and what talent we do have is under achieving. We are entering a period of rebuilding and imo that that should be done by a new GM and HC to take this team into the future

I'm not going to give you any flack. I agree completely. My point is not to give TT a free pass. Not by a long shot. I have stated the change needs to start with TT and end with MM. I think it's time for a complete overhaul. I just took offense with the OP argument that TT only had 14 players left on the roster from 2011 to 2014 drafts. My only point was that TTs drafts aren't the entire issue. I'm OK arguing that TT hasn't drafted the right pieces and I wholeheartedly agree that the Draft and FA need to be used in conjunction to build a team if you are not filling all the needs with capable players in the draft alone. That is what we are seeing. TT has drafted plenty of quality players over the years. More than many GMs but that is all they are, quality players. Not all pros. Not pro-bowlers. I have no problem with TTs draft philosophy if he also uses FA to fill the gaps. The draft and develop philosophy is great if they develop. Last years draft is not developing and it is costing this team dearly.

T, Eye; nicely said. I think the first half of TTs reign he was rebuilding the roster and used BPA most of the time. After the 2010 season and SB he started to hedge on his own bet and let need creep into his decisions. Why? Because instead of drafting BPA and filling needs with FA he bit himself in the A** and starting trying to fill needs with draft. 2011-2012 were huge reaches for him. I think he started coming back to his original SOP the last two years, but it left a void that we are struggling through right now. MM and DomC use complicated schemes that are rookie-unfriendly, that coupled with the injury bug has led to the current 'dead zone'.
Last years draft actually energized me. It's easy to look back and criticize, but while the draft is happening- I thought last year was pretty decent. The other event that worked against TT is the stretching of the draft over three days. I think that really leveled the drafting field. Bad drafters had a reprieve to reorganize and reset.
I guess what I'm trying to say is TT is a draft guru, He WAS a servicable GM, but it has passed him by. Hire a new guy, keep TT around 'emeritus'.
