Rodgers Wants Out

A wiser CAP guru would have to comment, but I believe the problem with a sign and trade is that any signing bonus money combines and moves forward into a single large CAP hit. Kinda the same reason certain players can't really be cut in the early year(s) of a new deal because it creates a pile of dead CAP money from the signing bonus. Maybe a deal can be put together that works, but since most players want that up front signing bonus money I would think it's hard to do. If it were easy I think you'd see it done all the time. Hopefully someone else can explain it better and in more detail.

With a sign and trade, couldn't they work out a deal with Adams and the trade partner to have as low an initial cap hit as possible?
Technically yes but it’s got to be executed by GB so if you then deal him there could be dead money implications

Yep exactly. GB either needs to tag him @ $19m or if they figure out a smaller cap hit it’s going to involve a significant SB so cash out + dead money.

This may be off topic but when was the last time a tag and trade happened? I'm not up on nor familiar with any of this cap stuff.

No if you signed Adams and traded him you would count all SB money against the cap right away as dead cap. If he signs the FT that would count as base money only and that $20 million then would come off the books when he is traded.

Not sure with other teams but Ted did one early in his tenor as GM tagging and trading the player to the Browns. Forget his name might have been Corey Williams or something like that.

The issue is I don’t see without getting Rodgers off the books you can even fit a $19m tag amount and comply with the rule of 51. Not sure on math but it would at least require both Smiths plus some major cap gymnastics to even get it close

Not just that be responsible for the SB payout. So no that’s not happening
