Post Game GB Defeats LA 24-19

Guressing this percentage went up after the Rams game. It might be time to demote Wicks out of the passing game. There is only so long you can wait for him to figure it out and keep going to him to have him try to work it out.

Dontayvion Wicks had a 16.7% drop rate the first 4 weeks, the 3rd highest among wide receivers with 10 or more targets per @FTNFantasy

On the season Wicks is only 10 of 29 for 124 yards. Thats not what you can accept from a guy you want to be your top 3 WR's

Tucker Kraft got up to 19.70 mph on his touchdown catch and run, fastest this year by a TE!

Who are the top 3? I'd say it's Doubs, Reed, and Watson, if he's healthy. Wicks would be a #2, and it's a competition for that level with Wicks battling it out with Heath and Melton for looks. But, with Watson looking like he's injury prone, that does create a problem for the would be #3 without Watson.

The big conundrum at this point is what role will Doubs play moving forward. I'd like to know exactly what ticked him off, because regardless of what he says, how that situation was handled by him and the team, will have a big effect on how he's viewed from here on out. Then there's the issue if they will end up trading him.

The sad part is that he's really our best possession receiver on the team, and for some reason, they've looked past him on a lot of passes. Was he open, or covered? Did the QBs and/or the coaching staff lose faith in them? Is he dogging it? All we have is the normal comments made about everything that's not great in Mudville.

I've re-watched a bunch of times that last 3rd down GB had, the deep throw from Love to Wicks that was incomplete. They only played it once in real time and just wanted to see what went wrong. The ball obviously went through Wicks' hands but I wanted to see what else happened, did Love get there late, did the OL hold up, did Wicks stop running etc.

Looking at it again I think Wicks was read 1 on that play, it was a kill shot for him. Love gets the snap and takes a beat to look off the safeties - a good thing - and then turns and fires to Wicks. Before re-watch I thought he may have been late seeing him but I think that was fine. He did one pat the ball, which seems to be part of his throwing process sometimes. One thing I didn't notice earlier was that as Love is going to throw, he gets a lot of muck from the pass pro right around his left (i.e. injured) plant leg and he made the throw off his back foot. He does that a lot but in this case probably smart/lucky. A DL split Myers and Rhyan and then walked Jacobs back into Love's leg, around the same time that Rasheed Walker's guy was approaching from Love's blind spot. Not ideal. And as for Wicks, for as good as he is at getting open, I don't think he actually plays the ball very well in the air. Trying to figure out what's off about his game and that might be the thing. I don't know that he needed to turn and leap for that ball like he did. People can say it was under thrown, but it ultimately went over his head and through his hands as he leapt for the ball - I don't think both of those things can be true. Really good WR in the league - and Reed is one of them - can catch that ball over their shoulders without doing a pirouette. I think Wicks misjudged it - thought it was more under thrown than it was - and then simply misplayed the ball with his hands.

So that's my breakdown - Love was a tick late patting the ball, couldn't get 100% on it because of the OL/DL trash incoming, but it was a pretty good ball, completely catchable and Wicks - after smoking his guy off the line - just misjudged and misplayed it.

What a frustrating game to watch. Very happy with certain aspects and overall with the win, but a head-scratcher game.

My keys to the season:

Kicking game: Narveson finally had a clean game. Nice to see and hopefully he has things cleaned up for the most part. (Now what was up with Whelan. Horrible day in absolutely perfect conditions.)

Run defense: Not good but not horrible. Rams were just under 5ypc with a very "meh", make-shift OL. Fortunately the defense did just enough to win when they needed to.

Inexperience at QB: Love was pretty good all day, but that pick-6 was another one of those dopey brain-farts he seems to have a couple of times each game. Hopefully he grows out of this over the years.

There were a couple of other things that stood out. Right now, Reed, Kraft and McKinney are carrying this team with all-pro level performances. We'd likely be 1-4 without them.

The penalty situation is improving. Less holding on offense and fewer overall, but still a couple too many for my liking, but in today's NFL 5-6 penalties seems like the new norm.

It was good to see more of Cooper and Williams on defense. They both made some important plays and hopefully they'll earn bigger roles as the season moves along as alternatives to McDuffie and Wilson getting snaps at LB.

Rashan Gary is just plain M.I.A. right now, and it's not the scheme. He has like 2 sacks in his last 12 games which includes a significant part of last season. Isn't helped by Van Ness continuing to be near invisible as well. The lack of pressure by the front 4 is a problem and made even worse by the fact that LA was missing 3 starters on OL. We may need to look for another Edge player in the 2025 off-season.

The o-line continues to look average at best. Yesterday they didn't run block particularly well and the pass blocking was pretty leaky most of the day. Hopefully the rookies develop and maybe they need another high(ish) pick in the upcoming draft.

i've never been a fan of that guy. he was a first round draft pick who took 3 years to develop into a starter. he's never had a 10-sack season, and he's performed at a decent level for two out of five years in his career. next year he has a $25m+ salary cap hit and an identical dead cap hit so it is unlikely we will cut him. i never thought he was worthy of that 4 yr(s) / $96,000,000 contract.

A tale of two halves for GB. That first half they sleep walked in and were lucky not to be down more. The second half was much better, Game ball to Tucker Kraft. Let's enjoy this one for a day and move on to next week.
They seem to play tentative in the 1st half. They used to do that even when Rodgers was QB. ML doesn't seem to have the killer instinct. That seems to transfer to Barley as well. Matt didn't use the run game all that much. And our defense initially reminded me of Barry's defense. How can Matt call such excellent games when Willis was QB but play tentatively with Love?

With the DL, I think we have to remember that last year Barry went to rushing 5 on almost every down in order to generate pressure, and despite the scheme change, there are no new players on that line from last year. It's strange how they all seem to have gone sour at the same time, but on the other hand, Clark has played a lot of career snaps and so has Preston Smith. Wouldn't be that strange for them decline at the same time. I've been a defender of Gary and I still like him, but he's had streaks of dominant play and steaks of invisibility. That's who he is and who he's going to be. LVN has been a project and still is, we'll see. I don't like seeing him trying to do things that I just don't think he's going to be able to do, but still hugely physically talented guy. Wyatt of all people has been playing outstanding ball and they miss him.

Bottom line, the talent and depth on the DL is probably oversold, and along with possible age related declines of Preston and Clark, explains the stagnation here. Hafley is going to have to get more creative and consistent with rush packages to create pressure until things turn with the other guys.

i have been asking the same question. it just seems like the team was much better prepared when willis was the qb. sure, everyone knew it was going to take more effort by everyone when willis was standing in for love, but shouldn't everyone be using that same level of effort every game?
