Post Game : GB Defeats Arizona 27-23

On rewatch, this was a funky one. If I had to summarize I'd say "stagnant". For the offense, maybe it was a response to AZ's defense - they were playing a lot of cover 3 and cover 4, I think. We had that one early opportunity for a deep shot to Doubs but there just weren't many more opportunities for anything like that most of the game. The shells they were playing weren't that deep either, so the field felt condensed and smothered. In the 3rd ML had one play schemed up for Golden deep but the corner just stayed deep over top of him the whole time and Jordan moved off of him and found Doubs over the middle for 15ish yards. Just not a lot there to work against. I think the answer is to run the ball and gain explosives that way, and while Jacobs and Wilson ran hard and did get their yards, it wasn't explosive enough to force AZ out of those deep looks.

Ya know, you watch these games and think geez the offense is disjointed and boring but when a defense plays a certain way against you, I'm not sure what else there is to do. Maybe ML could've done a better job of testing them deep and making them earn it, but otherwise I think you've gotta run them out of that stuff.

On defense I was surprised how little gaming they did up front. It was just a lot of pure 4 man rushes. They weren't moving Micah around, not really stunting or anything. Quay got home on a couple blitzes and he was generally a terror this game. Haf had his work cut out for him being down LVN and Wyatt, it's tough sledding. Brooks played a ton and they had him rushing off the edge a couple times. Sorrell was inside on some of the cheetah stuff. I kinda like what I've seen from Brinson on early downs, Wooden had another pretty good game and he combined with Stackhouse and Sorrell to blow up that 4th and 1.

Secondary play was just lacking. I didn't notice any opportunities for X to be involved one way or the other. Evan Williams had several and you see his lack of speed and aggressiveness. If they hadn't spent the entire off season training Bullard to play the slot then I would love to see what Javon could do there. I didn't get that one from day one and I still don't. Nate Hobbs was piss poor. Hafley didn't ask them to cover in man very often but every time they did those cover 1 looks, Brissett found Hobbs and Hobbs couldn't deliver. These were the kinds of plays that even Corey Ballentine has made over the years, just win 1 important rep on 3rd and long, couldn't get it done.

My wish list for trades continue to be a vet DT and a corner. By hook or crook they've gotta do something at those two spots.

On rewatch,
i admire you for going back and rewatching that mess. i couldn't do it. gutekunst's failure to properly address the situation at corner is infuriating to me. i don't know if it would have made a difference, but trey amos has started the last 5 games, and it would have at least been a reasonable attempt to fix the problem instead of drafting that project ot. maybe mark is right and we need a proven vet there. or maybe amos would have made the difference. either way, the acquisition of hobbs has been of very little value to us.

I didn't see our OL opening a lot of holes and the backside cut wasn't there most of the day... so your kind of screwd. All things considered I think it was B grade game on offense.

It feels like less of a mess when you look at the all-22, seeing the full D adds context to why it felt like a slog. Based on the calls and routes, I honestly don't know what anyone would want Love, for example, to do to have more yards or TDs. And I don't think the RBs left a ton of yards out there either. The 5 OL went the distance together for the first time all season and I hope consistency leads to improvement for them, because I think they were the most inconsistent group.

Re: Hobbs, I get you 100% but I prefer to try to look at the games and see what the guy did in the here and now. There's a whole offseason for judging the macro. For me, I'd put him on the bench. I'm not benching Bullard to make room for him inside.

Positional play thoughts:

QB: Not Love's best game, but was good. Seemed to handle the clutch opportunities better - especially late. Was mediocre early. Maybe he is like Favre and needs one good shot to wake him up? That run where he took a full force Budda Baker seemed to get him in the game. The timeout to prevent a delay of game was 13 seconds on MLF and 22 seconds on Love... seems more like Love's problem especially when he doesn't realize it is running out and he is still making adjustments down to the 1 second mark.

RB: Jacobs is a beast. This season would be VERY different without him. Even 1/2 of Jacobs is good. They need to stop running Wilson like he is Jacobs. Two very different guys where Wilson needs to run more outside and less up the gut. The last two games, it looks like Brooks is bringing zilch to the team.

WR: Golden looked like he was going to have a huge game after the first couple of drives, but then didn't do much else. Doubs quietly had a good day. I'd bet Heath doesn't last the week with Watson taking his place.

TE: Tucker Kraft - MORE COWBELL PLEASE! The rest - meh. We really need to find a blocking TE that can sneak out and catch the odd short yardage pass reliably (like Marcedes Lewis) for the 2nd TE. Musgrave can't block (nor seems overly coordinated to run and catch a ball at the same time) and Fitzpatrick doesn't seem to have the comfort level of the coach to catch a pass.

OL: I'm interested to see the numbers here (snap and PFF). I didn't see Rhyan out there this week (but might've missed him if he was in briefly). Morgan seemed to have a good day run blocking and was OK in pass block - a few key pressures at least. Tom didn't seem to be his usual either. Walker looked a little off or slow too. Banks had a penalty, but didn't see any bad plays.

DL: Star of the game was Parsons. He had some contorsions of his upper body that were freaky. I swore a couple of times, his upper half looked like a wet noodle where his lower half just ran around while the T was trying to block his upper half. His upper half would just bend and contort so that there was nothing to really push against (i.e. wet noodle) and then pop back up when the lower half got around the T to sack the QB. Brinson looked solid again. Stackhouse even held up -probably better when he has fewer snaps - and did excellent on the 4th and 1 stop. Gary had the strip sack, but seemed pretty quiet otherwise - solid, but not a ton of pressure. Barryn looked active out there but made some mistakes. It will help to get Wyatt back for pressure up the middle.

LB: Walker made a bad personal foul, but part of it was missing the pass and coming down on the QB's facemask. Otherwise, he had a good game. I do wonder how much of the communication issue we see is on him as the QB of the defense or just lack of practice together (injuries in TC). Covering TEs was atrocious out there. Way too many wide open throws to McBride. I'm thinking this on Cooper unfortunately. He looks a bit lost going backwards into coverage. And he isn't playing with the speed and decisiveness of last year.

DB: Hobbs - woof. What a bad day. Nixon - still pretty average play. Gave some up, but not much. Made a nice play - forced fumble or broken up pass - either way it was a good one. McKinney, Williams, and Bullard - solid play. Nothing great, but nothing terrible either. I just get the feeling this unit isn't communicating or comfortable where each other should be. Double teams and zones seem to leave some BIG gaps yet.

ST: 61 yards. Havrisik made himself some money these last two weeks. I wonder if he might be tradable when McManus is healthy? A 7th round or 6th for 7th swap?

FYI Walleye Rhyan did not play a snap Morgan played every snap at RG
