Pair of Badgers Football Players Pick up Weekly Big Ten Honors

Considering Wisconsin’s dominating victory over Michigan State on the road this past weekend, it shouldn’t have been surprising that honors were coming the way o the Wisconsin Badgers. However, it wasn’t just one, but two players who were honored as Big Ten Players of the Week for Week 4 of the season.

On Monday, the Big Ten announced that outside linebacker T.J. Watt was the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week and redshirt freshman quarterback Alex Hornibrook was the Freshman of the Week for Week 4 of the season.

After becoming the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday, outside linebacker T.J. Watt was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week thanks to his incredible day in the Michigan State backfield. He recorded six tackles on the day, but had an incredible 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in the process.

Watt’s 4.5 sacks on the season put him amongst the elite in the nation through four weeks of action. He is tied for seventh nationally and trails LSU’s Arden Key by just two sacks (6.5 to 4.5) for the national lead at this point in the season.

He is also another in a long line of Badgers linebackers to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors in the Big Ten, becoming the first player since Joe Schobert did it back in early October of last season.

As for Hornibrook, he got a massive win in his first ever collegiate start, but played a key role in getting the Badgers on the board early and often. While his 195 yards and a touchdown may not seem incredible on paper, it was how he did it that was incredible.

Hornibrook was efficient as could be in critical situations, going 9-for-13 for 136 yards and a touchdown on third downs alone in the game.

He became the first Badger to get the weekly award since T.J. Edwards did it last year.

Wisconsin will take on another big challenge, heading to Ann Arbor to take on the also undefeated Michigan Wolverines. Kick is set for 2:30pm CT and will air on ABC.
