Ben Sirmans replaces the recently fired Sam Gash.
Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy appears to have filled another vacancy on his coaching staff. According to Fox Sports' Alex Marvez, the team has hired Ben Sirmans as its new running backs coach.
Sirmans' most recently worked on the St. Louis Rams' coaching staff, helping Todd Gurley become one of the best tailbacks in the league as a rookie. Prior to his stint with the Rams, Sirmans coaching running backs at Rutgers and Boston College. He also spent time at Maine, Kent State and Michigan State.
The coaching position came open after McCarthy fired Sam Gash earlier in the week. Gash had spent the previous two seasons in Green Bay working with Eddie Lacy and the running backs. In 2014, the team ranked 11th overall in total rushing yards and yards per carry. However, the ground game regressed significantly in Gash's second year, with no Packers tailback reached the 1,000-yard threshold for the first time since 2012 and both Lacy and James Starks doubling their career fumble totals.
With Sirmans filling the running backs coach role, the Packers still need to find a new assistant offensive line coach to complete the staff. That position came open after the New York Giants reportedly hired away Green Bay assistant Mike Solari.
