So far, I've been impressed with the play of a few players. Love and Doubs particularly come to mind. The season itself is going about as well as I expected. It's fantastic watching a team trying to rebrand itself at QB, after having so many years of consistently high level play out of the position.
As I've said repeatedly, I saw this as a 7 win season, and anything above that was gravy. If that's as bad as it gets, with the turmoil and cap problems they have, I'd say it's been successful. Because there's no doubt it can go up from there, and not many teams can turn things around that quickly.
The only quasi-disappointment I have is in the defense, but when I consider the massive number of injuries that have hobbled front line starters, and specialists, I'm not even going to go off on them, but I will say that the coaches need to find avenues to harness what they do have available, not keep repeating the mistakes, and expect something different to happen, like LeFleur said himself.
When I look at the loss of the two pro bowl level offensive linemen that makes up the left, I totally understand how difficult it has to be for the coaches to come up with lineups that work, when the entire left side was in a state of flux since before the season began.
I think it was a bad mistake if anyone believed that either Bakh or Jenkins were going to be a serious part of any of our offense this year. It was doomed from the start, and everyone should have seen it, and prepared accordingly. Sadly, they didn't, and here we are, with gus running in and out of the lineup as they search for a combination that can at least represent an NFL offensive line. If they get this right, and some of the defensive players actually heal, and can help the team, they could exceed those 7 wins. But, until I see #8 going up on the board, I will doubt it happening.
There's also an elephant in the room that we need to address. The offensive line is so porous that there's the possibility of Love getting injured. What happens then?
