Kunin leads Wisconsin to High Scoring Tie

The Wisconsin Men’s Hockey team scored three late goals in all three periods to force a tie against 6th ranked Michigan Wolverines Saturday night at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Michigan’s Tyler Motte opened up the scoring less than 4 minutes into the game. Motte, who tallied his 11th straight point with the goal finished off a beautiful pass from JT Compher, beating Jurusik high glove side.

Luke Kunin, in a moment of foreshadowing, scored with under a minute less to play in the first period knotted up the game 1-1 headed into the second period.

Freshman sensation, Kyle Connor was the Wolverine to put Michigan back on top 8:11 into the second period. It was Connor’s 22nd of the season. He leads the nation in points.

Wisconsin would strike back late in the period once again. This time Grant Besse would provide the late period heroics, netting the goal to pull the Badgers even with the Wolverines, entering the third and final period.

The third period opened with a flurry of goals withing the first minute of play. First, JT Compher put home his first goal and second point of the evening just 15 seconds in.

Ryan Wagner responded 29 seconds later, however to pull the contest once again back to even at 3-3 with over 19 minutes left to play in the game.

Dexter Dancs, who scored a goal last night, found the back of the net once again just over halfway through the third period and Michigan looked like it would take the one goal lead all the way to the bank as they entered the final minute of play up 4-3.

With Matt Jurusik pulled from his post at net, where he managed 29 saves in the contest, and an extra attacker on the ice for Wisconsin, Kunin grabbed his second goal of the night to tie it up with just 27 seconds remaining.

The game ended in a tie, and after a scoreless 5 minute overtime period, Michigan won the shootout 1-0 giving them an extra point in Big Ten standings, but officially, the game ended in a 4-4 tie.

Wisconsin has to feel pretty good about their performance on Saturday. Obviously, not the result they wanted, but the team did not give up, coming back four separate times to earn a tie.

Next up for Wisconsin is another home stand against Michigan State February 19-20 at the Kohl Center.
