Taking things one at a time, top 1/3 in the league 3 out of 5 means worse than that 2 out of 5. Conventional wisdom in evaluating the Pack for some time now has been that a juggernaut offense needs only a reasonable defense, and we win it all. Last year was as you noted, so even a pretty good defense netted us the same disappointment in the playoffs. The day after the reverse happens (juggernaut defense wins the Super Bowl with a little assist from the offense) ought to tell us something.
In the changing world of sports, isn't having your worst season last year the exact time to start wondering if everyone else isn't catching up to you, generating the need for innovation? Isn't that sort of thing the reason Capers is perpetually on the hot seat (i.e., the league has caught up to him, but he keeps playing it the same way)?
Not rhetorical - how many substandard seasons does MM get? Remember, AR's clock is ticking.
