An early look at the unofficial depth chart

I agree we need a better pass rush. I hope we get some better play from our back 7.
I'm not ready to anoint Pettine as our savior. Our defense has a chance to be better, hopefully MUCH better.

I think a lot of our problems defensively last year was that Capers was too predictable. Somehow we tipped our hand a LOT. We could not get off the field on third down and no turnovers in the redzone? I think the league had DC scouted and he couldn't change. How many huge screen passes did we give up on our 3rd down blitzes? Too many. Then our offense would turn around and give the ball right back.

If Aaron doesn't start to take the check down and move the chains instead of looking for the big play he's going to get hurt again. I think our OL is okay, could be better, but our QB got hurt on one of his extensions last year and we've seen him pass up open WRs looking for the big play. He's got to modify a little bit for his benefit which will directly help the team also.

What is surprising is before the draft Gutey said pass rush was a priority. Then after it he said he didn't think this draft was that great for pass rushers and the board didnt fall their way....

why is that surprising? first of all - those are not mutually exclusive statements. pass rush can be a priority, but it's also possible that the draft doesn't fall your way because there aren't that many decent pass rushers.

second - and this is more likely the case - gms are known to blow a lot of smoke before the draft in an effort to keep their real intentions a mystery to other gms.

SINCE 2014, 4 years ago,

We have spent 1 first round pick on a safety (clinton dix)
one second round pick on a safety (josh jones)
2 first round picks on cbs (randall and alexander)
3 second round picks on cbs (rollins, king, jackson)
by my count, thats 7 first and second rounders for our secondry out of 10 picks total (kenny clark, spriggs, davante)
Meanwhile at OLB, where the bulk of your pass rush in a 3-4 comes from
we spent a fourth on Biegel last year, and in 2016 we drafted Fackerall in the 3rd. those are the only 2 picks in the top 4 rounds that we've spent on OLB since 2012 when we drafted Perry in the first. 2 lousy picks in the mid rounds for the most important position in a 3-4, when the 2 starters are 2 of the most injury prone players on the team, if not the league.

I don't care how good your secondary is. If a QB has 5, 6 or 7 (which we have seen way too often) seconds in the pocket, he's gonna find someone.

Bingo... So what was up? Were MM/TT/DC so bad at talent and scheme eval that they really thought the issue was in the secondary and not the pass rush? Did they overvalue their LBs so badly that they didn't think that was a problem? Did DC play so conservative and predictable because he had to due to the overall lack of talent on roster, and lack of production by the so called "stars" on defense?

What I see in this roster is year 1 of a multi-year rebuild on defense. Which is about right. This defense was awful no matter who you blame. I still do not think GB takes that next step until MM is gone though.

This is why I did not want them to hire from within. After a lot of time to think it over Gutey made a lot of moves, made the draft kinda exciting. But in the end this was a very TT-esque draft. You can see the TT influence.

I fully expect Cobb to be the #3 or #4 option by mid year.. A lot of hungry young kids there and Cobb fell off a cliff last couple years.

I hope that ups Cobb's urgency. Let the youth inject some spunk and good competition into the lineup.
