That's one hell of a mess at LB.

Perry can't stay healthy, Matthews is about done ... I'm hoping Gilbert can progress. Ryan and Fackrell for sure need to be moved off the roster - Martinez is marginal. If you can't pressure in this scheme and your going to leave rookies on an island hide)hope(

SINCE 2014, 4 years ago,

We have spent 1 first round pick on a safety (clinton dix)
one second round pick on a safety (josh jones)
2 first round picks on cbs (randall and alexander)
3 second round picks on cbs (rollins, king, jackson)
by my count, thats 7 first and second rounders for our secondry out of 10 picks total (kenny clark, spriggs, davante)
Meanwhile at OLB, where the bulk of your pass rush in a 3-4 comes from
we spent a fourth on Biegel last year, and in 2016 we drafted Fackerall in the 3rd. those are the only 2 picks in the top 4 rounds that we've spent on OLB since 2012 when we drafted Perry in the first. 2 lousy picks in the mid rounds for the most important position in a 3-4, when the 2 starters are 2 of the most injury prone players on the team, if not the league.

I don't care how good your secondary is. If a QB has 5, 6 or 7 (which we have seen way too often) seconds in the pocket, he's gonna find someone.

No pass rush, don't expect the secondary to hold up. It's all a matter of forcing the QB to throw before his receivers get into positions they can catch the ball.

i disagree with your characterization of martinez as marginal. after he first five weeks of last season, pro football focus had him graded as the sixth best linebacker in the nfl. the second half of the season was rocky for everyone on this defense because with a total lack of offense, the defense was simply being asked to do too much.

i also think you are jumping to conclusions about the scheme. nobody knows yet what the scheme is going to look like.

i do agree with jblood that we have not paid enough attention to the linebacker position in the draft.

Pro football focus uses their own unique grading system... not a great example to go on. That defense sucked last year. Making excuses about it regarding the offense or scheme doesn't help us get better and just furthers theggg( line of thinking that there always has to be an excuse/cause etc ...never we sucked and need to fix it ?

i never said the defense wasn't bad. it was bad. i just don't share the opinion that because the defense was bad, all of the players on that defense were bad. i think we have some talented players that were stuck in a bad scheme that did not take advantage of the players best talents. i think there is anecdotal evidence of this in the fact that a few of the players that were deemed "bad" enough to let go have turned out to be pretty good on other teams that know how to use their players properly.

if that makes me ggg(, so be it.

He stated we need pressure to be successful. MP has already stated a 2 different occasions he wants to play cover 1 man and put his corners on an island. (His words and MM not mine) Therefore Capt's statement vs pressure is correct. You play cover 1 without pressure I don't care how good your corners are your going to get skinned alive.

No offense RB but you don't need to see his full scheme for that statement to be true.

Martinez flashed signs of being a good ILB last year, but it's hard to gauge his, or anyone else's effectiveness because of how poorly the defense played as a whole last year. We might see the truth as to who can do what this year, but that is pretty much in the hands of Pettine, and how he employs people on the field, and how good our pass rush is.

No matter what we do, if we don't have a pass rush, we don't have the guys in the secondary who can hold up under the time given to QBs to find receivers. No matter what we do, we need to force the QBs to throw the ball before they're ready, or scramble, to avoid sacks. Fortunately most of them aren't nearly as good as Rodgers in scramble drills.

Well they weren't good RB. I think you can blame scheme only so much. Our depth was awful and to give credit where it's due I remember PackinAtl and Mark foreseeing this mess and a lot of posters here bitching about that.

Agree with 44blitz that based on what we know your going to have too pressure the QB. Now Pettine might have different ways of doing that but putting lipstick on a pig doesn't change the facts. It's still a pig.
