Cobb and Matthews depart..... New Staff Moving Forward

My God, they are paid to win Championships. If used to the players skill set and coached up, we have plenty of talent to bring home a Lombardi. If we were rebuilding, we should have traded Rogers.

We dont have SB / Lombardi talent, way too many holes left and you cannot trade Rodgers for 2 more year (contract )

Agreed. The talent on this team is not as bad as some like to think. The biggest problem is now gone. This first year may be iffy because of a new system and new coaching staff. If everybody catches on and buys in quickly, we have a good shot at a deep playoff run. I think a 10-6 type record unless killed by injuries again. Rodgers health is key in the teams success. Will be a learning year with potential to go a ways. 2020 should be SB contenders.

Of course we can't trade Rodgers now, but he shouldn't have gotten that contract if we were that bad.

We'll disagree in the talent.

I'm hoping the new regime finds a way to prevent the non-contact injuries that have decimated this team for years.

And, I'm hoping we stop using high draf picks on players with serious injuries to hugely important joints necessary to do their position, e.g. King, Harrel

if the talent was not so bad why did we sign 3 FA's who will start, not resign Cobb or Matthews?

I agree Rodgers should not have been extended last year, should have waited. As to talent there is still a major question mark after Adams at WR, OL depth is depleted, DL sans Clark is average, ILB needs more talent and just overall depth is not good.

Injuries happen, every team has them

Agree this talent on team was awful you can't say oh talent is not that bad and have as bad of drafts as we have had. Right now only 3 guys on team you can call proven blue chip talent on this team under 30 and that's Bak, Adams and Clark.

I think this team won't contend for SB in 2020 maybe for a division title but not SB I am looking maybe another year out into 2021 until that happens will need that time to add more talent via FA and draft.

I don't know that I would say the talent was awful, it was average in many ways and when injuries occurred, they lacked average guys to cover them. In actuality, I don't think our injuries were all that bad last year. Ryan, MoWilk, King and Allison were injured relatively early, and a variety of starters were nicked up at times but on the whole the starters were reasonably healthy and overall the Packers injury statistics were about average among NFL teams. You have to have sufficient depth to cover for some missed games by starters and key back-ups, but that is where the Packers were lacking.

On OL, the preferred starters were pretty healthy, but every time someone went down the drop-off was pretty extreme. Spriggs should have been able to step in for the 2 games Bulaga missed and the snaps that Bulaga and BahkT missed for parts of other games. He didn't. Nor did they have a decent answer to start at RG for most of the season. Those are talent problems.

AR played in every game, but the drop-off for his missed snaps was atrocious. Kizer as the #2 is a talent problem.

WR did have some injury issues that cost them a fair number of snaps but it didn't have a huge talent problem so much as a youth problem. Had TT done a better job at WR in the last 3-4 drafts (and FA) we might have been OK there so in the end it's still sort of a talent/personnel issue.

The DL despite not being elite actually held up pretty well despite MoWilk missing 12 games. They could use another guy there but the talent there is decent.

At iLB, they lost Ryan early, but I thought Morrison was a pretty equal substitute. Burks was not very good and neither was anyone else. They lack depth at the position.

At oLB they got very little from their starters. Fackrell had a nice year backing up, but Gilbert was not good. There was a huge talent issue at the position, which is why it was addressed so much in FA.

CB did have injury issues with King out and then multiple other guys getting nicked up. Talent at the position should have been OK. Breeland was a nice stabilizing pick-up.

S was a mess, hence the addition of Amos. HHCD was OK, but not consistent and reliable. Brice was a hitter but couldn't track the football. The rest were just guys at best and the lack of talent was clear. The situation was made worse when HHCD got traded and Campbell got hurt. They had to move WIlliams to S, which partly impacted the CB position.

To me, there was a talent issue at 5 different position groups. Not a disaster, but still speaks to the lack of talented depth and a lack of adequate starters at 4-5 spots. Fortunately, Gute made moves to fix the situation with the lacking starters. They still don't have much key depth which they will hopefully solve in the draft, which is why I see steady improvement over the next 2-3 seasons.

Lastly, I think there will still be a learning curve. Offense is new for everyone, and with 3-5 new starters on defense, they might need to some time to be their best as well even though the scheme is the same.

I think they'll be somewhere between 6-10 and 10-6. Seriously, so many changes and variables right now I don't have any idea how well they'll do.

Letting MM, CM3 and Cobb go were three things the majority of us thought needed to happen. Plus they bolstered the Edge, added a needed Safety and OG. The right things are happening. Still a long way to go.

When leadership, people and strategy changes a team goes through several stages:

1) Forming. Morale is average, everyone is waiting to see what happens.
2) Storming. New ideas emerge, new leadership assesses talent and previous methods, and matches to new tactics, relationships develop between coaches and players as they plan how to implement. Morale does decrease here as few like change.
3) Norming. This is training (physical and mental) and implementation of new strategy. Morale is at lowest because successful implementation is difficult. But it starts to build as players/coaches become familiar with each other and new playbook.
4) Performing. Relationships are established, all are comfortable with newly implemented strategy and tactics and they begin to perform as a team. Morale improves as performance improves. The sky's the limit.

The question is, how fast do they get from forming to performing? Six months? Three years? It doesn't happen overnight.

Read Oakleaf's statement carefully. See how all of it applies to the people on the sideline, and on the field. Unity is formed through a concrete plan of action that follows stages of development by making everyone aware of how they fit into the mold of what's happening. The loss of Cobb, Matthews, McCarthy was all necessary to start the process. Had Nelson been here this past year, he would be let go as well. It's a new day, and a new direction. Where it will go, we can only guess.

Let's hope the people calling the shots understand that it's one step at a time, rebuilding in a new image.
