Barry Church wonders if a flag will be thrown on “every play”

“I don’t understand it because as a defender, when you’re going in for a tackle, your first instinct — you got to lower yourself to get your pads even with the player’s pads,” Church said on 103.3 FM ESPN in Dallas, via the Dallas Morning News. “So you’re telling me if you’re a defender that needs to lower your pads to get more leverage on a player, and the running back goes low to protect himself, and you guys hit each other, hit him with the helmet or whatever — are they just going to throw a flag basically every single play?”
The greatest possibility for a foul comes when the offense is running the ball between the tackles.
“I mean, it happens in the trenches every single play,” Church said. “The running back comes through the hole, he lowers his head, lowers his body, and so does the defender trying to get leverage on him. It’s basically throwing a flag every play, you can if you want to. It’s kind of like holds. It’s tough. That’s tough on defenders.”

it's going to be just like offensive holding. you could call it on every play, but you don't. i've never been able to figure out how they decide when to throw the flag.

The rule as written would necessitate a flag being thrown on every play but it won't be, leaving it up to the refs discretion. Every play.

Which is the definition of a bad rule.

The biggest change this rule brings will be on the offensive side of the ball. The RBs and WRs that lower their heads into contact can and probably will now be flagged. It is going to be an interesting learning curve that hopefully gets worked out in the pre-season.

i believe they also made it possible for coaches to challenge whether there was actually helmet contact. this is going to be an ugly season. lots of bad calls and lots of delays for challenges. maybe its time to just change the game to flag football.

And that learning curve, at pivotal points in the game, could be decisive.

Theyre going to call it by the book in preseason, make everyone crazy, then stop calling it in the regular season, leaving everyone more confused than before.

For everyone who has believed for years that the officials decide who wins, this is another rule intended to fuel that conspiracy theory. It's like the league is trying to pass the buck onto the officials, and be able to blame them for injuries, by saying they "failed" to throw a flag when they should.
