Since Pettine intends for his defense to be "multiple", they may use Martinez for some sub-packages and then may add Ryan or Matthews or Jones in other sub-packages.

I'm very curious to follow how this is all going to shake out. It's also why I hope they can make a play for a player like Zach Brown in free agency.............shore the position up for a couple years until you can draft the right guy to fit the spot.
It definitely makes for an intriguing off season. You've hit on some good points.

I’d be shocked if Roquan Smith is still there at 14. If he is, Gute should run, not walk, to the podium to make that pick! There will be some decent CB’s to be found after the 1st round. Smith is a difference maker, Imo...

I wouldnt be shocked. With qbs pass rushers and now the swiss army knife guy in the secondary, the ilb doesnt get drafted like hawk did. And for good reason. Smith will be a good one but many like him didnt go super high. I do t think he tests like shazier.... That guy is crazy when it comes to numbers. Smith reminds me of deion jones. Ill even say hes got better instincts. Worth the pick yes.... If he slips some i can see that too

I gave the nod to James. Believe he is a blue chipper. I love watching Smith make plays, but he isn't very big- barely bigger than James. Plus, I think Pettine is going to use J Jones closer to the LOS, HaHa needs a fire lit under his ass and I can't see us coughing up nearly $10M a year for MBurnett. He's solid but not a difference maker let alone a playmaker.
Also, I think CMIII will move inside. Hoping Smith goes before our pick so we don't have to make that decision.

With ARod's recent comments and the other things happening, do we consider taking Josh Allen or Josh Rosen if one of them slide to 14? Then we don't extend Rodgers and the young QB starts in two years. Food for thought?

Saw a mock draft today that had the Packers taking Derwin James at #14, and still on the board were Arden Key and Roquan Smith. Edmunds and Davenport were taken earlier.

When the pick comes at #14, and IF (IF) all three of these players are still on the board, WHO would YOU like to see BG take with that 14th pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

My choice would be Roquan Smith.........no second thoughts.

I’ve thought that too, Danno. But I’ve recently watched my first clips of Derwin James. Wow! I can see why this kid is compared to Kam Chancellor! I would prefer Smith, but I will be happy if James is the pick too. We haven’t had an enforcer like that in the secondary since Leroy Butler.

I do think everything changes for this defense IF BG upgrades the pass-rush. I’m sick and tired of watching opposing QB’s stand back there all day. The worst QB in the NFL will pick your eyes out with that kind of time!

Key seems to be falling like a rock do to off the field issues and could be a big gamble he fixes them. I like James a little more then Smith just because James is a guy you start day one and also could allow Josh Jones to be moved perhaps to ILB helping to fill two spots at once. James also could be big if the Packers don't bring back Burnett in FA.

James reminds me of a Chuck Woodson type player, and I sure wouldn't say "No" to bringing in that kind of talent. Especially if we are confident that Burnett will leave via FA.

Right now, I feel like I'm just throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks.

After Free Agency shakes out, I think we will all gain some clarity as to what direction, us fans, might think BG will go with the first pick. The poll on this thread is suggesting the pick at #14 could be OLB, ILB, CB, S. For all I know right now it could be another OT or even a WR. sh))

I'm getting the feeling that BG could be an active participant in FA. I doubt there will be any splash signings, but you could see 3 or 4 mid-level, even upper mid-level, FA's come to Green Bay. I think BG will gain some cap space (currently $16.94M cap space) by working with Ball to do some restructure work on some contracts (might require them to be modest extensions) and maybe even a trade (would anyone bite on giving a 4th comp or 5th round for Cobb?)

I'm filing away several FA names away to keep an eye on.
TE - Trey Burton, Austin Sefarious-Jenkins, Luke Willson, Crockett Gillmore.
CB - Davon House, Kyle Fuller, Rashaan Melvin.
OLB - Connor Barwin, Trent Murphy, David Bass, Barkevious Mingo
G - Justin Pugh, Andrew Norwell
WR - Terrelle Pryor, Taylor Gabriel, Donte Moncrief

Would pay zero attention to those rise and falls yet... after the combine 4-5 guys that ran fast jump up. 4-5 that didn't will move down.

Honestly the target groups are very set. The interviews and other intangibles will really set a few guys a part on teams boards. The stuff we saw the last couple weeks is filler and smoke.

there are three things you can't coach or develop in a 20-something pro. speed, height, and speed. oh and speed.

there's no mystery why guys move up the draft rankings when they run a fast time at the combine. what is kind of a mystery to me is that nobody seems to know how fast these guys are before the combine. don't any of these college teams own stopwatches?
